Are these foods available in Santo Domingo (or elsewhere in the DR)?

me again -- wondering if it's possible to buy these foods here

(1) sugar-free peanut butter (the kind without additives, just peanuts and maybe salt)

(2) tofu

clues welcome!

if they're really not available, knowing that would also be helpful too.

thanks!

We have not found sugar free peanut butter in the country. I thought we found some at PriceSmart but my wife indicates they have the mucked up stuff as well. Sorry.

Sugar free peanut butter is available in a few specialty stores here in santo domingo.  And tofu is readily available.

@planner

I'd love to know where to find that peanut butter! I buy as much as I can fit in my suitcase on each trip back to the US! PriceSmart used to have one that was only Peanuts, salt, and cane sugar, but it now has hydrogenated vegetable oil!

Its called Super Fresh on  Calle Tiradentes in Santo Domingo. They have it

That wouldn't be this place would it (I hope not)? https://eldinero.com.do/270136/super-fr … s-puertas/

@wondering9

I found that too - what a bummer!

And here I was hoping you'd tell me I misunderstood the article ... I was wondering which foods I'd have to give up but I didn't think it would be this one. I'm actually surprised how many US products/brands are available here. Even Krispy Kreme!

We are inundated with some of the worst US products

We had someone locally making peanut butter with nothing but peanuts and salt. I haven't seen them advertise recently. I'd do it myself with my vitamix food processor, but peanuts are so darn expensive here! We use peanut butter powder (shipped in) in our smoothies and recipes. At least the powder is cheaper to ship!

Well wouldn't you know it, after striking out at a bunch of supermarkets in Santo Domingo, I actually found sugar-free peanut butter at two -- my second Sirena and about my fourth Nacional -- both on Jose Contreras near Av. Maximo Gomez.

Detail dump for @ddmcghee and any other peanut butter lovers: The brand name at Sirena was Virgin Nature (looks like a Dominican co.) (if my geezer eyes are reading this tiny print correctly, their email is virginnaturerd@gmail.com), peanuts only; and the brand name at Nacional was Full Circle Market (looks like a US co.),  peanuts and salt. I taste-tested both for lunch, and they seemed fine to me.

I don't know if finding these was a fluke or if those branches carry them regularly. They're close to the uni so maybe that influences their product selection?

I'll give the tofu another shot later (I have trouble finding it in US stores too, so it's probably hiding in plain sight ... good to know it's around somewhere).

Thanks, all!

Its interesting how where we think things should be, isn't often where we find them!!!

You believe what the label says, lol

A couple months later, just wanted to add that I have been finding sugar-free peanut butter at various supermarkets, but only occasionally and unpredictably. (And there is a US imported "natural/organic" brand that has both a sugar-free and a sugary version with very similar labels.) I just make a point of checking now whenever I'm in a store.

It was a budget food back in the States but it really is kind of a luxury here!

@wondering9

I remember this struggle. You can find tofu in a few places, but the natural peanut butter can be a proper hunt. The good news is it's not impossible. I've had luck at some of the bigger supermarkets like Sirena, especially the bigger ones, and Nacional. There's a Dominican brand called Virgin Nature that's just peanuts, and sometimes you'll spot a US brand called Full Circle Market. Both are sound. I've just got into the habit of checking the shelves whenever I'm in a store. It's a bit of a treasure hunt, but honestly, I've been known to panic-order a jar from McGrocer when I'm running low, just to be safe. Shipping stings, but it beats the craving. Hope that helps a bit.

And remember, if you see it, buy it,  might not be there when you go back!   I am Canadian and crave Miracle Whip. IF I find it I will buy enough for months of use!
