Extended stay in Belize

"Thinking of going to Belize for a little while and see if I like it.  Thinking late March early April. I have a few questions and I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm thinking San Pedro in Ambergris Caye but I'm open to suggestions."

Many people head for the Cayes (Keys) first, as a suggestion I would suggest taking a few days over your several month visit to do a quick tour of the rest or the country. You will find that there are several diverse regions in Belize. I usually suggest in addition to San Pedro, try visiting Corozol in the north, San Ignacio in the west, and Placencia, Hopkins, and Punta Gorda in the south. This will give you a quick overview of the country. The more time you can spend in each area the better you can explore some of the surrounding villages. Only you can decide based on budget, comfort level, and vision which place is best suited to you.

"How dependable is the power?  Are power outages something that happens every once in a while or is it an everyday occurrence. Also reading the rates of DSL. I see 16 Mb goes for around $350 US per month.  Is it cheaper in Belize city for example or are those prices high no matter where in the country you are? I need either DSL or cable for my home service.  I'll get the MiFi for when I'm on the go. Are there any parts of the city that doesn't have DSL or cable?"

Power outages are not a daily occurrence, but rather every once in awhile. They are probably more frequent then we were used to in Canada but are usually for short periods of time. After heavy storms or a hurricane they will probably last longer. The internet rates are pretty standard across the country. Cable providers provide a more stable connection and are available in most major centers but not so much as you get out into the villages. Hard wired telephone lines are not near as good as cable connections in my experience.

"I'm trying to find an apartment that has at least two bedrooms. Does anyone  have a suggestion  for a place that would do like a short-term lease? Like for maybe a couple months or more."

Apartments here are often not advertised but are rather found by looking around and asking what is available. When you get closer to your trip date (a couple of weeks away) you might consider posting an ad in the forum classifieds.

Other sources of rental information that worked for me in the Stann Creek district are the websites www.VRBO.com and www.AirBnb.com . Then once actually in the area, as has been mentioned several times here, you might find better options by asking around the folks you meet
