Life changes

djdjod97

Greetings everyone,

We are a retired couple in our early seventies.  We tend to have a bit of wanderlust in us and have lived in Montana, New Mexico, and Maine.  We also spent 4 years on a twenty-year-old, 34 foot, sailboat traveling from Brinnon, WA to Wrangell, AK and back.  We are searching in Belize for a relaxed community that we can join and contribute to.  Right now we are planning our first trip in April/May of this year.  Given our age (as our adult children say)…sooner is better for a move. 😉 We would really like to communicate with and meet folks when we are there to learn about all of the experiences and along with the seasoned advise that has come with living in Belize.  We are looking forward arriving in Belize and on to our next life.

Cheers,

Jo & David

Hi!

Go to youtube and search for wheretonexxt.

The couple gives their experience on living in Belize over the past 4 years or so. They're located on the mainland.

They have informative videos and will engage with you via email.

That might be a good starting place. They give less of a sales pitch approach and more of a more than 1 side to a story view. Unfortunately, I don't see a lot of conversation on this site. It may come, but it's usually pretty slow.

Good Fortunes to You

Thank you so much for the reply.  I was beginning to wonder if we would ever get any responses.  Thought maybe the expats had "pulled up the ladder" so to speak.  I will go on you tube right now!

Do you live there now?  If so, what has been your experience.  Would you rather message via our email?

Cheers,

Jo

Jo - There also FB groups you can seek information. There are good and bad experience live in Belize depend on people. What specific do you want to know?

No,

I don't live there now. I do own land there and I'm in the process of trying to figure things out as well. There are lots of places to find info, but it takes work and asking the right questions.

As CoCo mentioned,  Facebook is an option. So, is Reddit.

There are lots of groups asking similar questions and providing feedback.

I've visited several times and will be visiting again soon. Whatever information you get, do your research on it. Some people are misinformed and share wrong information unknowingly and some just do it intentionally.

Some will give extremely positive reviews and others will give the polar opposite.

You have to find what works for you. Plenty of reasons can impact someone's experience.

Belize Is still a developing country and barely 40 years old with a population smaller than many North American cities. So, there are things that will be a relief and things that will take getting used to.

No big box stores like in the US, No fast food chains, no home depot, no 2day Amazon Prime delivery(you can have things shipped it just costs).

Depending on your budget and what you consider relaxing, you can try 1 of the cayes(pronounced keys, like in Florida). Caye Caulker and Ambergris. Mainland areas where expats are likely to be found are Placencia, Hopkins, and maybe San Ignacio and St Helena.

Corozal borders Mexico and there is a growing community of immigrants/expats or whatever people call themselves moving into that area.

Near the capital Belmopan is less touristy, but is home to lots of supplies, government stuff, larger medical facilities, etc.

Get an attorney if buying property. it isn't necessary, but can help you avoid headaches and anxiety 😆

As far as contact outside if the forum, I think there are private messaging options here.

Be sure to take time to visit Carmelita Gardens in Cayo.  It's just north of Santa Elena on the other side of the river.  Right now you need to go via Bullet Tree Falls and Santa Familia to get there, but the highway is being redone in the semi-near future.  Well worth the time to check it out.  Completely off-grid, nice little growing community on the Belize River.

Good luck with your travels!
