If the US defaults on debt, the dollar is expected to fall.

Should expats start converting USD to local (or other) currencies before this happens, or even if it doesn't happen since raising the debt limit obviously does not solve the root problem.

Is it time to ditch the dollar?

@jayrozzetti23 Never underestimate the mighty US Dollar............ there is a reason everybody wants them, and most of the world's commodities are sold in USD.   USD-VND 23,545........that's a far cry from when. it was when I started investing in Vietnam - back then it was 10,000 VND to a USD   Peace

I like to post the "mid-market" rate, because it's always what I receive at ATMs here when withdrawing VND from my Schwab USD account.

Are you charged a FOREX fee? When I send to my ACB USD account and then "buy" VND for my ACB Visa debit domestic account, I seem to recall I get hit with a small fee.

I haven't done so in quite some time, so my memory is foggy on that.

Not sure OB, I don't see any fee on my statement. It just asks me how much VND I want to buy, then it says to check the exchange rate, then fire in my Mcode & the deal is done. I cant see any fee on my statement.

So that’s why I got scolded and directed to the bank where I stood in line for over two hours. Rookie mistake that had to learn the hard way

Not all gold shops are illegal for foreign currency exchanges.  Some operate under exchange authorization from the GOV.  Just make sure to ask and see the authorized licenses hanging on the walls but the problem is these gold shops have about the same exchange rates similar to banks.

I find it comical that gov't sanctioned publications (e.g. VN Express Int'l) publish daily "black market" currency exchange rates.

So very, very black market.

At 26,000 VND to USD $1, wouldn't $100 USD be 2.6 million VND, not 26 million?

26,000 = $1

260,000 = $10

2,600,000 = $100

26,000,000 = $1,000

Did you exchange $1,000? That would make sense. . .

What I learned though is not all shops are licensed to do exchanges.

"Most Gold Shops are NOT licensed to do exchanges" is much more accurate.

About Exchange Rates at ATMs

(This applies for any currency, not just USD):

When you withdraw from an ATM here, no matter which bank you use, you will normally get the State Bank of Vietnam exchange rate which is always reflected in the VietcomBank exchange rate.

Ideally though, the ATM card that you bring to Vietnam should be from a financial institution that overrides the SBV rate and gives you the international MID-MARKET RATE, without a foreign exchange fee or a foreign transaction fee.

If you are only here for a week or two, it's not worth worrying too much.

But if you are planning to stay here long-term, the difference between the SBV rate and the mid-market rate can be quite significant.

(PS: never click yes on the screen that offers an optional bank exchange rate)
