Suggestions of moving and living in Gibraltar

Hello Gib Expats

My name is Richard and I am looking to work and live in Gibraltar. I have sold my property in London and I am temporarily staying at my parents' house preparing for the move to Gibraltar. My previous employment was as an IT manager in a London secondary school and before that I worked firstly as an operator and then in management in a customer services environment. I am looking to buy a 2-bedroom apartment in Gibraltar. The problem I have is how to start the process. Some people have advised me that its best to go to Gibraltar to get employment and start looking for a property and others have advised me to do it from the UK through the internet.

I would be internally grateful for any tips, suggestions or expericance from previous expats what would be my best options and solutions to start my new exciting experience of living and working in Gibraltar

I look forward to your suggestions.
Kind Regards
Richard

Hi Richard

From my perspective, I moved to Gib three years ago on the basis of a job offer received while I was working in the UK. I would not of moved here without a job to go to. However, I have met several people who have told me they moved to Gib without anything lined up and found jobs once they arrived.
I get the impression that the more specialised the work the more difficult it will be to find a job.

Be aware that property is very expensive here. We live in Gib because we have older kids and I didn't want to put them through the Spanish system and couldn't afford private education. Many expats live in Spain and commute into Gib for work. For an indication of prices look at www.propertygibraltar.com.

Best of luck
Alan

Thanks very much it's just something we are considering but wouldn't do it without a detonate job to be honest. We have been contemplating it for years and just waiting for the right job to come up as my husband will be the breadwinner. What kind of removal costs were involved? Did you take your household possessions with you ..? Do you tent and what is it like trying to find rental property and then moving onto the property market yourself?

Did you take a car with you and if so what age and what were the implications of import tax?

Was it difficult to get registered for NHS?

What do you do for dental treatment as I have heard it's private only.

Are prescriptions costly?

Hi Alan

Thank you for your great feedback

I've already researched properties in Gib and I am able to buy a a 2 bed appartment and still have some cash left from the sale of my property in London.

I think I will try both options by looking for the work on the web here and also going to Gib for a week or so to look for a property and work.

Maybe we can hook up for chat when I'm there.

Regards
Richard
