Hi from London, England!

Hi guys

I am based in the UK and I have been recommended Oman as a good country to move to.

I am a practising Muslim and would love to be in a country where the Adhaan is heard 5 times a day.

I was wondering how I would be able to live in Oman without an actual job. I currently run a small business - this is International but I am unsure how a Limited UK company can be transferred to Oman.

I was looking at business opportunities in Oman and I noticed quite a few Franchises were available with specific investment requirements.

If I invested into one of these - would that make me a business owner and therefore allow for me and my family to live in the country? I am unsure how it all works.

I welcome your thoughts.

Many thanks

Iqbal

Hi Iqkhawaja,

An expatriate is disallowed from owning any business, independently. By law, the expatriate must necessarily partner with a local (Omani), who would hold the majority stakes in the company.

You need to consult with some local law firm specialising in setting up of new businesses, who will guide you on the steps to acquiring your own business in Oman.

Alternatively, log on to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's website which would furnish further information and details.

All leads and information can be accessed easily by googling for the needed.

Dear Iqkhawaja,
You are welcome in Oman, You will find most people here are lovely and friendly.
Of course there are some habits and traditions you've to get used to, but generally they are simple to be followed.
Regarding business, my advice is to get assistance from an international low firm. You will find a list of recommended lawyers in UK embassy.
My best wishes for you.

Thank you so much for your comments.

I read somewhere that the local omani shareholder only had to hold 35% - and that the country was considering changing this to a point where no local partner would be necessary.

I think the article I read this in was from 2017.

I will do some more investigating

In the UAE there are a number of free trade zones where you can set up a business on your own without a local partner. Moreover UAE economy is more stable and much more business friendly than Oman.

Hi heard about a couple free zones in Oman too... I am currently exploring them.

My brother was in Dubai for 8 years or so - I personally would prefer Oman
