As Mauritius prepares to reopen its borders on July 15, the island has a record of more than 1,000 local COVID-19 cases. Here's a summary of this week's local news.

COVID-19: more than 1,000 local cases in Mauritius

Mauritius currently has 390 active COVID-19 cases. But figures keep on increasing as per the daily updates of the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life. After a significant drop in the number of cases in mid-April, the island has recorded a total of 1,082 cases since March 5. Contact tracing is ongoing across the island. On the other hand, five dormitories occupied by foreign workers have been declared red zones.

Inflation estimated at 2.7% in December 2021

These are figures from a recent survey by the Bank of Mauritius. The inflation rate is expected at 2.7%, while most operators surveyed expect the rate to vary between 2.5% and 3.5%. Less than 30% of those polled estimate an inflation rate of less than 2.5%. According to the survey, the inflation rate could reach 3% in April 2022, mainly depending on the exchange rate.

Road works in Mon-Choisy / Cap-Malheureux

From this Thursday, June 17, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. until Friday, June 25, the two lanes of the B13 road connecting Mon Choisy to Cap Malheureux will be closed due to road works. A concrete footbridge will be installed for pedestrians. There will be road signs to guide drivers.

The construction of the Quai D flyover will soon begin

A flyover costing around Rs 400 million will be built very soon around Quai D, in Port-Louis. A tender was recently launched by the Road Development Authority (RDA). This flyover aims at facilitating traffic to and from the capital. It will give access to the city centre on one side and to the waterfront on the other. This project includes the construction of two flyovers. It will also eliminate traffic jam at the entrance to Port Louis and in nearby regions such as the Military Road.

Gym owners threaten to go on strike

Many of us are impatiently waiting for gyms to reopen. However, no date has been announced yet following the March lockdown. Gym owners, most of whom are currently in financial difficulty, are threatening to go on hunger strike from Saturday, June 26, if they are not allowed to reopen soon. A letter was sent to the Prime Minister through a trade union.

A new anticyclone is approaching Mauritius

The new temperature drop since Wednesday hasn't gone unnoticed. According to the Mauritius Meteorological Station, a strong anticyclone is approaching the island from the southwest. Moderate winds are expected in several regions. During the day, temperatures should vary between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius on the high lands and between 25 to 28 degrees Celsius in the coastal regions. At night, expect temperatures ranging from 16 and 18 degrees Celsius on the high lands.
