Mauritians love their street food, it's all about getting some friends and family together and trying out new and familiar places where the street food is not only fresh and healthy but made with love from a local. So why not join them? And what better alternative way to enjoy time with friends and family, while the pubs and restaurants are closed and in the fresh air.

Gateau piment and roti

Situated right next to the supermarket in Beau Bassin sits a fabulous hot pink hut where you can sink your teeth into some delectable traditional bites. If you haven't tried Gateau piment yet- now is the time! This cute hut cooks up a cacophony of snacks, a favourite is the Gateau Piment this delicious and it is made up of daal, chilli and fresh herbs, rolled into small balls and deep fried to perfection. Speciale Roti also cooks up fresh, made to order roti (flat bread) which is perfect for dipping in your favourite Mauritian curry, eggplant and chilli fritters, and all at a very reasonable price.

Fish and mango vindaloo

Fresh fish and mango vindaloo sound tempting? You need to get yourself to Sunrise Snack in the north of the island, just opposite Store 2000 supermarket. With an array of snacks to tickle your fancy from haleem (type of stew) to chicken curry. You definitely won't be disappointed. But their speciality is the fresh fish and mango vindaloo served in either a baguette or roti. It's delicious!

Seafood and Chicken fried noodles

If you are looking for a delicious option for lunch as you explore the beautiful coastline of the South-West, look no further than the village of Le Morne. Sat on the picturesque shores. A fabulous gentleman sells his fresh, homemade seafood and chicken fried noodles. Take in the breathtaking ocean views as you enjoy the freshest noodles.

And for dessert…

Vona Corona Ice Cream

Mr. Aslam and his family have been making ice cream for 116 years! A tradition passed down through the generations, taking 3 hours to home make daily this is the most delectable ice cream on the island. Served up in a different flavour daily and accompanied with coconut flakes and strawberry jelly this tasty treat is even enjoyed by the Prime Minister himself! If it's ice cream you love then also head down the street to The Millionice La Grillade and welcome to the home of the very first rolled ice cream in Mauritius! Founder Sumaiyah has created this fun concept where the ice cream is spread out over a freezing cold plate then chopped and mixed with a variety of sweets, chocolate and nuts then rolled into perfect batons and smothered in whipped cream and your choice of sauces. This delicious treat is a street food that is trending all over the island.
