Hello
I find going on to internet and doing a comparison will help far better than someone's personal view. There are a couple of good banks around. I use Millennium pcb but I find them autocratic.

I agree on that advice.
I now use Agricole Bank as it was flexible in offering a joint account to non residents.
Finding them more flexible than Ciaxa and less expensive.
However, they required a significant bond to join. About €500 if I recall.
I think all Banks, like much of Portugal commerce and public sector is far too autocratic, pedantic, inefficient and bureaucratic, however.
Millennium Bank, from my casual observations, looks as if it is the bank of choice for most non-Portuguese residents.

Millennium Bank, best overall service, international, English speaking.

what about Caixa Geral de Depósitos bank

The main banks, I would say almost all banks operating in Portugal, belong to the same network (Multibanco network) with ATMs and POS terminals in the shops.

Santander and Millenium are good banks for you. If you want a bank with basic, low cost banking operations, you have the option of Bancoctt.

(Homebanking with english version available)

HSBC is an international bank - look it up online.

HSBC does not operate in Portugal. By using their cards in the Multibanco network it will be charged higher commissions. @Antony will not benefit from the advantages of the ATM + POS network in Portugal.

Also, as a visa applicant, @Antony needs to have an account in a bank that operates in Portugal, so HSBC does not serve what he wants in this thread.

Just basic account low fees use it in Atm withdraw and pay in supermarket stores
With some offers benefits and use account documents in applying visa stay

So which one of 2 you recommend
JohnnyPT

If you have an account in any bank connected to the Multibanco network, you pay no commissions with debit cards used in ATM and POS terminals. If you use credit cards (even from Portuguese banks and euro accounts) you pay commissions.

Almost all Portuguese banks have monthly account maintenance fees, which can vary between 5 and 10 euros. BancoCTT has no maintenance fees but is very limited in banking operations, it is a low cost bank. So I suggest Millenium, Santander, Novobanco, BPI, ....

I saw BPI bank has a low fee also cashback on the credit card or discount when using it
so is connected to the Multibanco network and has a wide ATM and English support
as a credit card  in Millenium, Santander as I google benefit in traveling, Gas, cinema  which actually I did not want
not google for novabanco yet but from the website no English support
also, bancoctt no English support
Activo bank is good and also can use to prove  fund I Owen when I go to SEF to get a visa resident
