The Energy Saver That Everyone in Cyprus is Going Mad Over!

I have noticed several advertisements on the Daily Mail and Daily Express websites, specifically aimed at those of us who live in Cyprus, pushing a so-called 'Energy Saver' which, the advertisement claims, can reduce one's electricity blll by up to 90%... and people in Cyprus are 'going mad over them'!

The spiel which accompanies this advertisement is a combination of nonsense and downright lies.

The device being advertised is a small plastic box that plugs into any socket outlet and dramatically reduces one's energy consumption. So they say!!!

The downright lies include the following: (1) Energy companies have been fighting to keep the device a secret and off the shelves, (2) it uses technology invented by Nicoli Tesla.

Inside the box is an inexpensive capacitor and a small circuit that drives an LED which shows the device is working!! (after all, ALL electrical devices have LEDs, don't they?) The device uses a well-known process called, 'Power-Factor Correction' which, it is claimed, reduces the load current to your residence which, in turn, saves energy. This is complete nonsense, as reducing the load current has absolutely no effect on the energy drawn by the residential load.

The energy drawn by a residence is determined by the power of the load and the time for which the load is operating. For AC circuits, power is the product of the supply voltage, the load current, and the load's power factor. If this box really 'improves' (i.e. 'increases') power factor then the load current will reduce in the same proportion, leaving the energy consumed exactly the same as it was before the power factor was improved.

IT IS SCIENTIFICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS DEVICE TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION. IT IS NOTHING LESS THAN A SCAM.

So, be warned, don't be persuaded to purchase one of these devices.
