I've managed to find info online about transferring a stay permit to a Z-Visa inside China, but I've finished my work contract here and I want to stay and travel as a tourist before going back home to the UK.
Is it possible to get an L-Visa inside China without having to leave to have it processed? I got the feeling I couldn't do this with a stay permit as I had to show why I needed to be there, and simply to tour around may not be a good enough reason.

You can go to the entry / exit immigration office near you, and go to the counter and ask the officers there. They will be able to direct you to the next office to handle your request.
