Move 2 Gibraltar from UK serving police officer

Hello I am looking to move to Gibraltar with my husband i am currently a serving UK police officer and he is a railway worker. I am aware if i move to gib that i will have to start my career from scratch and take a pay cut if i am successful in applying to gibraltar police.

A couple of questions

Has any one made a similar move? If so pros/ cons/ any advice??

What is the cost of living?

Any jobs for my husband if he was to retire from his current railway career? As he would be joining me.

Is it easy to take a dog over ?? As i could not leave her!

Thanks any help would be appreciated

Hi Emmajono

I haven't any advice but will be following closely. I am also a serving officer as is my husband. We are both in specialised roles so I've enquired with RGP re the processes. If I hear anything I'll let you know.

🤞😊

Hi thanks for your message i spoke to recruitment for RGP quite a lot last year and asked if it would be possible to move to Spain and work in Gibraltar they stated that written permission from the chief of police would need to be sought but it shouldn't be a problem. I noticed they have to you that is not an option now! Maybe something to do with Brexit?? Are you still considering applying? I was all ready to apply this month once my DBS check came through but now I'm not so sure what to do. I know its not a great wage for the first few years so would probably struggle for any sort of imcome after rent and bills etc. Next year I will bw top band Police constable so it would be quite a big pay cut which I dont mind, but may not be doable to live in Gibraltar on that wage even renting a basic place is so expensive.

What are your thoughts on it all? Good to hear from someone who is considering the same as me.

Hi, I have recently been to Gib delivering a course to RGP and GDP, the living in Spain issue is caused by the long standing dispute with Spain wanting sovereignty over Gib.

As such the Spanish can sometimes close the border or make the border hard work to cross. Normally it's very simple. The issue put simply is that if a lot of Police Officers live in Spain and the Border closes you will not be able to get to work. Therefore there is a cap on the AC mount of officers who can live in Spain.

Housing is expensive and the Government recognise this and have a scheme where the Government pay a portion of your what is usually a flat. I don't know the ins and outs but I believe the scheme is for Gibraltarians to enable them to continue to live in their own country.

I loved Gibraltar and would transfer in a heart beat but not sure I could financially

Good luck
