Hi all,

I'm Dave, from the Seattle area in the US.  “I’m retired, and am hoping to live in Greece for a year once my wife retires.  We spent some time in Greece in 2018 and loved it.

We would likely live in the greater Athens area.  I’d appreciate any input on which neighborhoods or suburbs to consider where it may be easier to connect with both locals and other expats.

I would appreciate your insight about the retiree residence permit.  Is it difficult to get during the 3 months a US citizen can stay in Greece as a tourist?

I’m also wondering whether it is realistic to live in the greater Athens area on 2000 to 2500 euro a month, assuming I don’t own a car.

Thanks for your support.

Hi,in January next year a new visa system will be in place which allows for a three year stay with multiple entries I believe, scroll down through previous posts and you will see members discussing this subject and go on line for information.Your financial situation is fine, most of us here live on far less but try to pay as low rent as possible, small cheap space, studio for me is fine, less cleaning too.Be careful that you wont have extras on the rent such as lift etc, these things have been talked about many times so scroll through previous posts.Rents are always on the up,some areas are more expensive,it depends if you are willing to take a ten minute metro trip in to Athens,if you want really central you will pay more.Im in Egaleo, cheaper with two metros, great shops and a park, nice eateries, its not upbeat enough for most people though.

Try to go for a small block of apartments, this avoids those extras such as a lift which are forever going wrong and even if you have the new visa you may still need to register yourselves as being here but the Greek embassy near you will enlighten you on this.People often moan about registering themselves at a designated police station but I believe its a good thing, everyones whereabouts should be known for their own follow up safety as sometimes people go missing and the last known address is important. It may be that your rent will the straight price they ask without extras but always ask about the small print.

There are other American members on expat.com who reside in Athens who may love to meet up with you in down- town Athens for a good chat so you you could post a request to meet up on here but depends when you are coming with regard to Covid and how that all pans out as far as meeting up goes.

I think the new visa is an EU visa which means hopping about Europe would be possible. Some Swedish friends of mine return home from Greece sometimes via Patras on the Pelopenese, they go to Venice from there by ferry boat, stay a few days then hop on a cheap flight home, all of this is prebooked, thats how to get cheap flights. But of course Covid is upon us now and we are unable to fulfill our travelling dreams at the moment.
