Exchanging uk driving license.

With Brexit looming the UK embassy here is advising everyone here to change driving licences to Maltese ones.

Has anyone done this recently? How long does this take?

It appears at least we get to hold on to our British ones while this is happening - important for traveling. Can someone confirm that’s the case?

Not something that comes up here often.

Mine took 3 months to come through because of delays at the UK end. It was 3 years ago and I can't remember whether they kept it or not at the time of application or when I received my replacement.
I think they kept it at time of application as I recall having a temporary paper receipt to us in the interim.

I have switched my Belgian driving license to a Maltese one in order to take advantage of the local 125cc scheme in November 2017.
It was a two-step process.
First you go to Transport Malta with the filled application document and all the required papers.  They want to see your original driving license so you have to show up at their premises. They will then contact the licensing dept from the country that issued your driving license to check that everything is OK on their side.  They send you a letter when this is done.  In my case I received it in less than two weeks.
Then you show up again at Transport Malta, they take your driving license and give you a paper instead.  You receive the Maltese driving license card in the mail some time after (was a week or so in my case).

awesome, thanks quentin798

Did you have to surrender your UK DL after you got the Malta one?

Yeah you don’t keep both

OK, went to Transport Malta, first week in January. My fault but I missed out 1 photocopy (back of UK driving license) so I couldn't apply. Nice lady told me that I could apply by post and I would receive a confirmation that my application was being processed followed by a letter to collect the driving licence.

3 weeks later, no confirmation so I went back to Transport Malta where I was informed that my application was being processed and I should hear in 2 weeks. 1 say later, I received the letter from Transport malta that my application was being processed!

Anyway all being well, I can then exchange my licence (payment of €80).

Thanks svale :)

A follow up. I received the letter from Transport Malta to exchange my driving license today with a requirement for a medical certificate. The form attached was a standard one so I will have to go to the doctor on Monday.

I am 63 so not quite in my dotage yet! My only problem is that I wear glasses (obvious from my UK license photo). I don't mind getting a medical certificate but has anyone else been asked for one?

When I went to change mine they told me that as it was still current and to leave it till I was 70 when the UK licence would expire.
Then I had the doctors form to get signed, his questions - you saw you're own way here so you can see OK and you can hear what I am saying can't you? Signed the form and that was it (€10)
I was told it was only at 70 that you had to get the medical form signed and it cost me nothing.

One other thing that a lot of people forget, is that your UK licence has to have your current address on it to be valid and, technically, even if you still have a UK address as well, if you reside abroad then your licence should be changed, many don't which means they are driving without a valid licence though I don't think it bothers the Maltese authorities!

I wasn't asked to provide a medical certificate.  I'm fifty and don't wear glasses (yet).

You may only need a medical certificate when you reach seventy.

As I said, I am only 63 so was surprised to be asked for a medical certificate. When I went to the doctor today, he said Maltese are required to get a medical certificate prior to getting their licence. He wasn't at all surprised to be asked for a medical certificate. Not a problem apart from the €10 for the doctor! I
