Health Insurance

I will be moving to Portugal in March 2019 and will need medical insurance.  I am 76 years old and cannot qualify for private medical insurance.  I have a quote from two private medical insurance companies that quote a monthly cost of about Euro 900.00 for my wife and I. My wife is 64.  Any suggestions from Expat.com readers.

We have selected the health insurance from ACP (Automovel de Portugal). It is called ACP Saude Prime. We are pleased with the service.

indeed
i have familiar that was kicked out from the Medis network due to age [ 73 years old ].
Reach the Deco/MGEN to see if your are eligible. Its a product that was negotiate with the consumer association DECO with its origin on the "mutualist french system".
https://www.decomais.pt/seguros/seguro-saude

Also EDP is a seller agent of health insurance -> https://www.edp.pt/particulares/apoio-c … /faq-11123 , i believe no age limit to subscribe.
I would sugest you to look at "associação de socorros mútuos" in your city. This is really worth it, the coverages are limited but when needed its worth it and very afordable [ you should have this combined with another premium service ].
There are some products targeting senior citizens as for example
https://www.acp.pt/saude-e-seguros/para … empre-avos or http://www.lusitania.pt/senior------/501.htm , but need to check eligibilty. Maybe you could reach an insurance company so they can prospect the market and present suitable options.

if you can read French, i believe its been discused on the French section of expat.

I am 70Yo single no major health problems. Cigna Global quoted me $408 per month for an excellent policy. YMMV
