The Casino is great,such a fun atmosphere and always busy!The Elephant and Wheelbarrow in St.Kilda can be fun if you're a backpacker too:)

Keno movie theater near the top of Collins Street. Its in a shopping complex. Box Hill for a Chinese shopping experience. Catch the tram from Box Hill to Port Melbourne. Great sightseeing trip.

cafe's and bars are less violent and calmer, hence easy to meet people
It will be nice to have an expat group in Melbourne. Catch up weekly or fortnightly for outings.
