Availability and cost of a medication

Hello all,

I will be going to Ecuador in two weeks and staying for three months, at least.

I am wondering if anyone knows if I can buy mesalamine, also know as mesalazine (both are generic names--the brand name in the US is Delzicol), and what the cost is.  I'll be living near Cuenca so will be going to the pharmacy there.

I very much appreciate any information or tips.

When I moved to Ecuador in 2013, I brought a 90-day supply of my prescription meds.

Regardless of what you learn from others on this thread, I recommend that you do the same with your meds, to avoid having to visit various pharmacies hunting down your prescription during your first few weeks in La República.  In my experience in Quito, supplies of specific medications vary from pharmacy to pharmacy .. over time, as well, at any given pharmacy .. and, for mind-bending drugs known as psicotrópicos y estupefacientes, a prescription from a specialist doctor may be necessary.  Based on information at webmd website, I doubt that will be necessary for your meds.  Most non-benders are available without a prescription.

Since your stay may be for just 90 days, you may not even have to refill the prescription in Ecuador if you have a few pills to spare.
