How to bring your car to Uruguay

Hello everybody,

If you exported your car to Uruguay, were there any formalities that needed to be completed beforehand? What were they?

What is the best way to export your car? Is there a limit on the number of vehicles, or perhaps the age of the vehicle? Are there limits on emissions or emission controls in Uruguay?

What are the expected costs of exporting a car? In your opinion, is it worth it?

Once you arrived in Uruguay, what were the applicable taxes? What was the customs process like?

How do you go about registering an imported car in Uruguay?

Is it best to buy a car once you have arrived or to bring your car with you, in your opinion?

We look forward to hearing from you!

These are all great questions. I am trying to estimate costs as well.  This website gave me an instant quote for transporting a container from Florida to Montevideo. https://www.icontainers.com .
They quoted me between $2220 to $2800 for a 20 foot container and $2450 to 2750 for a 40 foot container.
I'd like to know what else it would cost to bring a $26,000 dollar new Subaru Outback to Uruguay.  I just can't find enough information to get a good idea of the taxes and fees expected.
I called the Subaru dealer in Montevideo and was quoted $63,800 for the 2018 model with a 2.5 liter engine and $73,800 for the 3.6 liter engine.
Thanks

Looks to me like importing "new" versus buying it there, you just might come out even or with a slight loss - but if you import you'd also have to navigate the shipping and port charges and the aduanas charges and many many others.

The taxes alone for me would make it prohibitive.  This article details some of the charges which will vary based on the vehicle:

Also you don't know if they will allow as "new" a vehicle with a few dozen or perhaps several hundred miles on it - this matters because only returning Uruguayan citizens are allowed to bring back with them a used vehicle:

The first link gives two examples of a 1.6l vehicle, one diesel and one gasoline engine, worth $10,000 USD CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight).  Taxes are based on the CIF value of the vehicle.  The $10,000 diesel vehicle could end up after all the taxes are applied, costing as much as $40,400 USD.  The gasoline (nafta) vehicle would be somewhat less.  Larger engines than the 1.6l will cost more, too.

Just some of the taxes they list:  Arancel de importación outside MercoSur, 23% of the CIF price; tasa consular, 5% of CIF; IVA, 22%; impuesto IMESI, 34.5% for gasoline, 115% for diesel.  There are other charges they list, too.
