Hi everyone,

It is widely agreed that speaking Oromo is essential for a successful integration in Ethiopia. Do you agree? Share your experience!

Do you speak Oromo? If so, where did you learn this language? Where can one attend a language course in Ethiopia?

If not, how do you cope with daily activities? Is it easy to communicate in a different language with Ethiopians?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Yes , only if you are living and working in country side that too in Oromia region.

More or less, most of the people speaks or Understand Amharic.

I don't think it is must to know Oromiffa.

But it will be added advantage definitely.

Do you speak Mandarin..cause the world seem to be for Chinese and good to know Mandarin.the question u asked is very silly for me....but good to know languages.....Ethiopia is communicating in Amharic for centuries....so if you want to communicate u should know more than 80 languages here.

Hey!
I born and grew up in Oromia region. Which mean the area that working language is Oromifa. To your surprise, I don't know even greetings. My message here is, it is not mandatory to know Afan Oromo unless you want to gain more knowledge. The people is nice and everybody can understand more or less. Especially at the city side, Both Amharic and Oromo languages will be used, but Mostly Amharic is used for everyone. If you are thinking to be at the countryside of specifically Oromia region it will be better if you start learning, still not mandatory. If you are planning to live another region Oromo language never be used. In short, Amharic is the basic language to survive in Ethiopia, Since it is the official language of the country. Ethiopia is collection of 82 languages.

Hi.

It is very challenging not understanding the language. We use one of our local staff to communicate so it eases the problem somewhat.

Definitely, it's the truth that speaking Oromo, the local language, does help your living in Oromiya. So as in most countries worldwide.

Thus, there are several dialects in Ethiopia and the official language is Amharic!

Meanwhile, Ethiopian people pay more respect to those who have good command of English.

My conclusion: not really essential to learn Oromo, unless you love it.

Dear Priscilla,
Depending on the type of work you are planning to do, Oromiffa could be crucial. Remember translation is error prone. But certainly, not all of the 80 languages are spoken every where. Amharic is spoken or understood in cities. Ethiopia is following a federal government system. The state of Oromia is the largest & most populous region. Official language in Oromia state is affan Oromo. If you would like to uncover more, keep on asking.
