Bus from Thu Duc to District 1

Excuse me. Is Thu Duc near metro an phu? If yes, you could catch bus no 53. It goes to ben thanh market. I am newcomer also.

But the district Thu Duc is quite far, it's also depends where you are exactly.
You can use Google map direction. You can see all route bus of ho chi minh there.

Since the new update for googlemap, now this apps is not realiable. It always show the furthest bus from your place.
For example: before google map show bus no 150 from hai ba trung to metro an phu. After update: it show the furthest bus and bus 150 is disappear.

yes maybe it's not 100% reliable, but it's still work for some route and can give some informations.
before I used a vietnamese website with the bus route. I will try to find again the link.

If you look at the tabs on the left you will see two entries that you need.  One is sơ dô tuyến  (line diagram) which will open a schematic.  A direct link:  http://www.buyttphcm.com.vn/admin/Image … 2014-7.jpg

If you can decide from the schematic which line or lines you need to take, you can go to the next tab Trạm dừng nhà chờ (roughly Bus shelters).  This will open an interactive map.  It's all in Vietnamese but you can figure it out.  You input the line you want to take and it will show all the stops well as the route.  You may need to zoom in or out for it to be readable.  There is also a check box for the reverse route.  Link:  http://route.buyttphcm.com.vn/routeoftrunk.aspx  I found this map very useful and even my wife, who likes to close discussions involving local knowledge by simply saying "I know because I am Vietnamese," used the interactive map.  There is also another tab that lets you download Excel files with scheduled times but I doubt that they seriously keep on schedule!

To give credit where it is due, these maps are posted in another discussion named Are there bus route maps for Saigon? but some of the links seem to have changed and no longer work.  This is an update.

Thu Duc is a great place to experience the "real" Vietnam, whatever that is.  It was semi-rural when I first went there 20 years ago.  Even today, it is still very distinct from downtown.  The new best way downtown by motorbike is through Q2 and then the tunnel but I don't see any buses using that route.   The best bus for you may depend on whether you live on the University side closer to Q2, or further west which will take you over the Binh Trieu Bridge.
