Importing a Home on Wheels?

stepgirl38

Hello. I have been traveling Central and South America for the last 12 years in a 1979 35-foot converted school bus. Diesel engine converted to run on Waste Veggie Oil. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge about importing such a vehicle? The dream is to buy a small plot of land where I can park and live in the bus, but also to use the bus as a means of transport. Has anyone done this? Thanks in advance!

Absolutely not allowed. You may find someone offering to sort out fake papers for $$$$ but 9/10 it's a scam.

IF you want to permanently take the bus off the road, that I have no idea. But as for importing your vehicle, there is no legal way to do it (I tried to do exactly the same some years back)

You can bring a used vehicle in to drive, for the length of your legal stay as a tourist.

https://www.aduana.gob.ec/viajeros-por-via-terrestre/

Click on "Ingreso de Vehículos"

If you want to import a vehicle you should read this link:

https://www.aduana.gob.ec/para-importar/

Click on "¿Quiénes pueden Importar?"  You will see that you must register as an importer in the ECUAPASS system and be approved by Ecuador's customs agency, SENAE.

BUT also, in general no used vehicle may be brought in.  This link says "La entrada de carros usados en general está prohibida en Ecuador."

You can read numerous links all saying the same thing - no used vehicles, only new ones.  And only Ecuadorian citizens returning to live in Ecuador may bring in a NEW vehicle.  The only exceptions, I believe,  are if you are an accredited diplomat with a personal vehicle, or if you are registered and approved as an importer.  There may be an exception for antique and classic vehicles but in my quick search I did not see anything about that.

You can do a search for
ecuador importar vehículo
...but they will all tell you basically the same thing:  You can't do it.  The laws do not allow it.

Thank you all for your input. From everything I’ve read, I assumed that was the case. I wonder what the regulations are about parking a rolling home permanently and indefinitely on your own property. I guess that’s a question for the aduana.

The dogs of SENAE may not get involved in how you set up a private property provided you are not importing the vehicle.

More likely, I would speculate, the municipality might want a say depending on local ordinances.

If I were planning to do this, I would consult a local attorney with experience in real property law in the specific locality.

The usual advice not to buy land in South America without living in the target area for a year .. does apply.
