Looking for Reliable Contractors

jeepywilson

Hi Everyone... we have a fazenda in Morretes, PR and we are having a heck of a job finding contractors to do even the simplest of jobs.  We built our house from scratch a few years ago (which is a story in itself) and are STILL trying to solve a number of serious issues.  Amongst other things, we have had roofs blown off, bats, structural failure, exploding showers, termites, boilers filled with sand... It's like the worst ever episode of Grand Designs.

We are struggling to sort out a properly functioning well - we have had four drilled, one of which is sort of functioning, one of which caused our plumbing to fill up with sand and two abandoned after the contractor 'didn't have the tools needed' and then vanished into thin air.

We have been through six different general builders, even building a simple outbuilding is beyone anyone here and the standard of workmanship is very poor. We are paying a decent rate, but it just seems like everyone wants to do a couple of days work and that's it.

We also need a decent plumber and electrician - unfortunately most of the ones we have had to look at jobs clearly have no idea what they are doing.   As an example, the caixa d'agua fitted originally was done incorrectly, but every contractor has a different opinion and we are at the point where we don't trust anything anyone is saying.

We are pulling our hair out now - literally the only person we have that is any good is the guy that cuts the grass.

We are disregarding any contractors from Morretes or Antonina, and looking in the Curitiba area for any that are capable, qualified and prepared to come down to Morretes.  As I'm sure some expat folks will have found out too, as soon as people find out we are from the UK then the price triples.  We had a quote yesterday for the equivalent of R$4000 to replace the exploded shower - that's triple the day rate for the UK!

Maybe we are asking too much, but we just need who will turn up when they say and do a job to a decent standard.

Does anyone have any reliable contacts?

Welcome to Brazil! It’s indeed a challenge to find adequate workers for doing construction work for sure. Do you have any relationships with the owners of the local building supply stores (materials de construção)? They usually know the reliable workers around town. Also, you may want to consult with a local architect and have them draw up plans for a small out building. They should guarantee the work and also be able to provide you with some names of reputable people in the area. Maybe even give you the names of some sub contractors (plumbers, electricians, well drillers). I have a question, what exactly is an “exploding shower”?
