Quick question on taxes

EliastheGringo

For background:

  • I moved here in November 2022.
  • Got my residency through marriage in July 2023
  • I started working shortly after getting my residency card in July and stopped in September
  • I did freelance work on the website Upwork and in total made $210 USD ($189 after their fees)
  • I worked with a British business and the money was transferred to my US Bank account.
  • I have not worked since as I'm a stay at home husband

So my question is do I file taxes? I've been looking into it but I'm still confused. I know I don't need to file in the US. I'm hoping to get some clear answers here so I don't need to hire an accountant but if it comes to it I can.

Thanks in advance

03/13/24 @EliastheGringo.  Welcome!  If you've been living here since November 2022 you've presumably been living on something, probably funds that you've been bringing in from abroad, unless you're a dependent of your spouse.

If you're a dependent, that presumably will shake out in your spouse's tax filing.  If you're not, you may have incurred at least a filing obligation.  Talk to a Brazilian accountant whom you feel you can trust.  They aren't than expensive, it will set your mind at rest, and you'll have advice that you can cite to the Receita Federal if the question ever comes up.
