HELLO !

gOPERK

My wife and I are considering moving back to Amman where I met her. She lived in Amman for many years and worked as a nurse in several hospital. I worked in Jordan for two plus years and liked it. I have a retirement income of $4,000 USD (about 3,000 JD) so I'm not worried about work. I would like an interesting job but it isn't an absolute need, maybe even some volunteer work, I'm a skilled trainer instructor.  I'm assuming we can live comfortable on that amount, my company paid for everything when I lived there before so I'm sure I would be a little more aware of costs now. We left in 2006 and I'm sure my wife would return to nursing.

Our main reason for wanting to return is the many friends we left in the Jordanian, Russian and American ex-pat community. I would also like to use Jordan as a home base for travels around the Middle East, Europe and the Med, I have some things on my bucket list to do and see.

My main area of concern is getting my 1985 Corvette (not worth so much but my baby) and our Chrysler PT cruiser into the country, Both cars are paid for. I know! I know! gas is costly but we would use cabs for most of our daily trips. We would purchase our household stuff on the local market after arrival. I didn't notice when I lived there but do Jordanians have garage sales? and or used outlets for household goods, I figure a used pot cooks as well as a new one. Any help on actual costs and taxes would be helpful. Also we would bring our well mannered dog along, I have no use for a man that would leave a friend behind.

I think we are up on utility costs and water and heating oil, I think that INTERNET access is better than 2006 when we left??

I would also be interested in any safety issues since 2006, We are not stupid and don't put our selves  in obviously unsafe circumstances, We are both respectful of the culture and generally mind our own business and stay out of politics.

Thanks for any input or comment especially about the cars.  Gary and Gala

Hey, Gary,

Welcome back to Jordan!

I know the vette is your baby, but the taxes are going to be murder. You will probably end up paying about 70 percent of the market value. It'll all be the same though, cause cars here include the tax.

Household goods are plentiful here, but about 130 percent what you'd pay in the US. Your best bet is to check the old downtown area and haggle with the storekeepers. Some of the supermarkets also have these things.

Internet is ok. I just signed up with a wifi usb service with orange, the phone company that is economical and is fast, about 7 mbps. It is reliable and runs in all of west Amman. Service to the east is coming soon, they say.

Good luck on your move. Where are you coming from in the states? I just moved here last year from Chicago.
