The difference is in cost. Public medicine is officially free. But in deed most of patients pay to doctors directly.
In private you also pay, it`s a little bit expensive than to public, but it is legal. And the attitude to patients is much better - nice personnel, attentive doctors, progressive supply, English speaking assistants/doctors etc.
About insurance - it doesn`t work at all hospitals and clinics. Only at one those have contracts between insurance company and medical establishment. The list can be published on official company`s site or known at insurance company call-center.

Does anyone know if or where I can get (European brand and manufacture) of medication for high blood pressure and statins  in Ukraine.
I live in Poltava. I am prepared to travel to Kyiv.
I have in the past brought from England extra, but now I return there less and less, I need to find a supplier in Ukraine.

Irbesartan 75mg
Amlodipine 10mg

Well, they said government hospital is free ( I was wondering howcome, since Ukraine is not a rich country) Then, I got the answer This "free" term is a total nonsense for me. I live in a small town near by Mykolaiv Reg at the moment and I just had a labour recently. No private hospital around the town, only government one. So I have no option. It was a frustrating moment (not talking about the labour itself), we have to buy our own medicines in the pharmacy (the doctor gave you a very long list of medicines to buy) and other stuffs for the process of the labour.  You need to have a powerful connection if you want to be treated well by the hospital staffs and to have a "VIP" room- non sharing room- plus don't forget to tip everyone, otherwise don't expect them to be helpful or friendly Professionalism and hospitality is pretty hard to find here. In the end you spent pretty much a lot of money in government hospital,especially if you are a foreigner.

Is it efficient ?
Not at all, I better pay upfront for some amount of money and get a good service.

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?
I have no personal experience with this one, but my friend did. Government hospital in Kiev is even worse according to her story, since that she chose private sectors, more professional and more friendly staff.

I think the healthcare system is excellent in Ukraine, that's if you have private insurance. I work here and I have always gone to the American Health Center.  The services are excellent.  The staff treats you like you are a VIP!

The doctors are excellent and they give you a thorough work up when you go for a check up.

I have been quit long in Ukraine and what can I say you about the health Insurance. Just for a name you will be first tempted by there offers but when times comes you need it thet donot go for it. And the private sectors that is a rear thing in Ukraine. Doctors are talented but due to lack of technology they are not good at treating. I short if you want to visit ukraine and don't know either the Russian or ukranian language then it's pretty bad for you In order to get in touch with people's.

My experience was down and dirty.

Don't expect as many air-conditioned pretty offices as you would in the US.

I paid extra, because I was an ex-pat.

Everyone was courteous and professional.

Then I came home to the US - my Government doctor told me my Ukrainian doctors did not know what they were talking about - they did - he did not.

Total cost - under $60 for 2 doctors, emergency room, xrays, tests, and treatment .... Then the US government cost was 'FREE.'

In December last year I was rushed to our local hospital with severe gastroenteritis.
The hospital was clean but very antiquated, Luckily for me my wife knows most of the staff there, she explained that I speak hardly any Ukrainian and am diabetic.
After what seemed an age with all the tests then not being able find the correct doctor because she had gone to town to do her shopping, I was placed into a small ward with six beds all of which looked like they was from the distant past.
I was treated better than I had expected and apart from one incident where a very young nurse forgot to give me my Sodium drip I was back up and near normal after a couple of days.
So from my one experience of our local hospital, yes it was very antiquated compared with my local hospital in England, but I was treated well and the staff even tried to speak English, which I thought was a nice gesture.
I have since been told that I was the first English patient to be treated there, so maybe that is why I was treated well.
I was charged at the normal rate that the locals pay, no more because I am English.

Which city were you in? The care and treatment one gets seems to be pot luck . sometimes very good sometimes not so good.
