Is the Algarve (Lagos) right for retirees?

Hi. I am a retiree from US and thinking of moving to Portugal. I’ve been reading up on the best region for ex pats and seem to keep stumbling across the Algarve region. I want to come visit and see first of course. I am looking for beaches, quieter surroundings, walkable areas, accessibility to public transportation. I have found so far that Lagos might be my place. I truly appreciate all or any suggestions. Are ex pats welcome? Thanks so much.

Hi @Kavallarisj, Welcome.

Algarve is one of the most popular regions for retirees in Portugal. Expats are extremely welcome, and local hospitality—combined with the fact that English is widely spoken—makes integration very straightforward.

Lagos is indeed a good choice. It manages to balance historical charm with all the modern conveniences. Other options with expat communities are Tavira, Burgau, Vila Real de Santo António, etc.

Great, thanks so much for your response. I am now feeling more confident in my choice of places to stay there.

Welcome, and congratulations on the move — Portugal is a great choice for retirement.

Lagos is genuinely lovely and a solid pick for what you described. A few honest things to weigh as a retiree specifically:

- The Algarve is quietest and most walkable out of season; in July–August Lagos and the coast get very busy and hot, with prices and traffic spiking. The shoulder seasons are wonderful.

- Public transport is okay along the coast (train plus buses between towns) but thins out quickly inland, so many retirees end up keeping a car.

- It has the largest, most established English-speaking expat community in the country, which makes settling in very easy.

One thing worth doing before you commit: spend a few days in Northern Portugal too. The Porto / Vila Nova de Gaia coast (Canidelo, Matosinhos) ticks the same boxes you listed — beaches, quiet residential areas, very walkable, and genuinely good metro and bus links. Summers are milder and it is noticeably better connected by public transport than most of the Algarve, with a major international airport nearby. It is a different feel — greener, a bit less sunny in winter — but on your exact criteria it is a strong alternative that many retirees overlook.

Either way, visit both in person before deciding; they are very different and people are often surprised which one wins them over. Happy to answer anything about the North if useful. — Borys, Cosmicvortex (Porto)

I am surprised. I expected Lisbon to have the largest, most established English-speaking expat community in the country. Where did you get your numbers from?
