Vaccination

https://www.animalcare.pt/blog/geral/pl … o-para-cao

Vacinas obrigatórias (mandatory)

  1. Raiva: A única vacina obrigatória é a antirrábica.
  2. Microchip: Para a vacina da raiva ser válida, o animal tem de estar identificado com microchip registado no SIAC (Sistema de Informação de Animais de Companhia).

Vacinas recomendadas (não obrigatórias) (recommended - Ask a local vet about it)

Mandatory:

  1. Entry Requirements: Ensure you comply with all EU/Portuguese regulations:
  2. Microchip (ISO-compliant).
  3. Valid Rabies Vaccination (given after microchip, wait 21 days before travel).
  4. EU Pet Passport (or an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) if coming from a non-EU country like the UK, issued within 10 days of travel).

Accommodation and Dining:

  1. Pet-Friendly: Always check in advance for hotels/rentals. "Pet-friendly" can mean an extra fee or restrictions on leaving the dog alone.
  2. Restaurants: Generally, dogs are not allowed inside restaurants but are often welcome on outdoor terraces/esplanades (always ask permission first).
  3. Veterinary Care: Veterinary services in Portugal are of good quality. It's a good idea to know the location of a local vet in the area you will be staying in case of an emergency.

another thing you should be aware of is processionary caterpillars.

We have been worn by many friends as well as our veterinarian. The caterpillars travel in a procession and the tiny hairs on these caterpillars can cause moderate to severe reactions in some humans, and I’m told can be fatal to dogs and small animals. I’m always on the lookout for these when taking our dog out for a walk. I believe they primarily nest in pine trees, so be more vigilant around areas of pine trees.
