I got the following in a private message:
Hello there, I am 16 years old, planning to go college in PR. Spanish was my 1st language, so I'm hoping/guessing that helps? I can speak/talk it perfectly. Do you think I'll be accepted over there? Will I find a job (part time) just to keep up with rents and stuff, or should I not even think about moving to PR?
I graduate from high school in May '11, I'm starting to save up a couple of money to try and go over there. I would please like to know any other information I should know or your opinion.
Thank You.
Being fluent in Spanish helps, absolutely.
If you're going to be accepted will depend on your GPA, just like in the US. Different colleges/universities have different requirements so the only way to find out would be getting in touch with the college where you would like to go to.
Getting a part time job is doable, I guess, but if you need to pay everything from what you're going to to make, it's not going to be easy. Like I wrote in another thread, my daughter had a tiny room with an even smaller bathroom in the student area around the UPR in Rio Piedras and she had to pay $250/month for that. Add the cost for food, clothes, transportation tuition, books etc. and you're going to need at least 1,200 dollars per month. The min. wage is around $6/hour so you should work at least 200 hours/month. That's more than a full time job!
Bottom line, you'd need a grant and/or financial support from your parents to make it happen.
I would recommend to come over to PR (with your parents?) to check out the place where you'd want to go to, look at the local market for rooms/apartments/on campus living quarters etc. before you enroll.
