You can book ticket here!
Weekend and holidays bit expensive, otherwise 200.000 VND for one way. You can book it online. Timings you can see on the left pane.
Seek someone's help to book or go directly to the ferry and buy ticket. From Ben Thanh: Take Le Loi street then turn right to  Nguyen Hue street. End of Nguyen Hue street you can see the ferry (10B Tôn Đức Thắng, Q. 1, TP. HCM).

There's a hydrofoil (fast boat) that runs between the river bank in D1 and "Front Beach" in Vũng Tàu.  Last I checked the fare was 400,000 VND per person ($20).

If you don't mind those shuttle vans, Hoa Mai is a very popular service that runs the Vũng Tàu Highway, cost from D1 to Vũng Tàu probably around 120,000 VND ($6).  But their drivers are a little "lead footed".  Don't take these guys if you're easily get carsick.

By bus would take all day...been a long time since I took that route but there is a bus station outside Bến Thành Market.  Take any bus (fare should be no more than 50,000 VND)to Big C at the Vũng Tàu Highway Intersection Roundabout (ngã 3 vũng tàu).  You can just ask people which bus goes to Biên Hòa City.  Then once you get to Big C, you take Bus 11 (Fare 30,000 VND) from the roundabout towards Mỹ Xuân Industrial Zone.  Then you take Bus 6 (fare 30,000 VND) all the way to "Back Beach" in Vũng Tàu.  Total one way about 110,000 ($6).  It's about the same as the shuttle van but you'd get a nice slice of how the average poor Vietnamese gets around.  Don't be surprised if you get "sandwiched" since these bus operators like to overload their busses 2x or 3x the design load capacity (more profit).  Fun stuff worrying about getting picked pocketed, dying if the bus crashes, sweating like a beeotch....but what a great experience!

If you want to go to Vũng Tàu this Sunday after the Orphanage Trip, Citsym lives in Vũng Tàu and you can get a ride with him - cost probably free.  He's a good guy; I met him last Sunday on another charity project.  He's from Queensland, Down Under.   Click the link and give him a PM.

There you go...200,000 VND one way, so 400,000 VND round trip.

The only problem with the hydrofoil is the weather, it was cancelled two days this week due to rough seas. Go by bus and save the drama of the hydrofoil not running.

1,400,000 VND / 120 km = a little under 11,700 per km.  About right.  You must have been in a hurry or the company is do deep pocketed, 70 bucks is no biggie.

The rideshare section of Vietnam's Craiglist is empty. :D

My flight was at 01:20 in the morning and normally I take the last ferry which puts me leaving the house a little after 4pm. Taking the taxi (which I think is safer than the high speed vans) allowed me to stay home with my family a few extra hours. When you have to go to work for 4 weeks at a time every extra hour with family is priceless.
