I'd say that your need for available, on-call assistance will be even more important than the lodging you choose, especially during your first 3 weeks.

Also, you'll need physical therapy which almost certainly isn't included in your surgical fee.

It sounds as if you don't have any personal connections in HCMC. I'm a retired registered nurse and that worries me a lot, for your sake

How long will you stay in hospital? Based on my limited experience here in Ireland, after your discharge you would normally spend at least a week in a nursing home receiving physical therapy. You will need care, this is very serious surgery.

The package qouted from FV includes 6 days care post op. I'm going to face the same issues where ever I do this, so to me it makes sense to go to where I'm most comfortable with the surgeon.

I'm coming to HCMC at the end of the month (I'm expatriate in Cambodia) to arrange a hip replacement (poss. bi-lateral). I'll need at least six weeks to recover as I understand so am looking for somewhere suitable.
I came last month for an MRI and the hotel in district 5 was kind of potentially suitable, i.e. reliable elevator, 350k a night, hard bed, decent chair, bathroom with no step, so I could ask the manager for a deal. It was a bit pokey though as I'll be inside a lot, possibly a live-in carer to start. Not sure how the manager would feel if I was on crutches.

I've got a few more options to try next time from booking.com. I don't know if the hospital (likely FV or Vinmec) will know anything. I asked Vinmec and they just said airbnb, but to me hotels look better.

Look for hotels in District 7 near FV Hospital. Many if not most hotels in D1 have steep and numerous steps from the street up to the lobby - difficult on crutches. 

If close to hospital, complications can be a sort ride away?

PS. A man I know had bowel cancer surgery at FV about 5 years ago. He’s doing well and praises to the sky the skill and care he saw and received there. District 7, HCM City.

Added note: you almost certainly won't be given crutches. much more likely you are going to be using a walker.

I have not had the best of luck using booking dot com. Try Expedia.
