Prejudice and Intolerance.

I guess it's fair to say that most if not all people on this forum are against racial or religious prejudice and consider such intolerance as unacceptable. I have to wonder however, if being entirely honest, how many are really as open minded as they claim, myself included.
I have visited around 50 countries over the last 35yrs or so on the hunt for some very rare cars that often turn up in the most incredible and unlikely places from the Namibian desert to the jungles of PNG.
But I do have a short blacklist of countries where I would never do business.
As an example one of my personally blacklisted countries isn't one of the obvious ones that first comes to peoples minds and having recently refused to take on a commission there was immediately accused of being prejudice.
Prior to my retirement I was perfectly happy to do business almost wherever including the Middle East from Iran to Israel including Gazza as I have no interest in anyones philosophies, religious beliefs or skin colour. All the same to me whatever the mix is. Cuba in fact is one of my favourite places in terms of locating some very unique cars and components and I have no concerns over the various human rights issues, embargo's etc either there or anywhere else. But my short list exists just the same.
The country I refused the commission in, as an example, was Romania. I know it is entirely wrong to tar all the occupants of a country with the same brush but this doesn't change my refusal to do business there.
My reasons are simply because the past history of a vehicle, its ownership progression etc accounts for a good part of the vehicles value and Romanian vehicles tend to have somewhat ‘dubious' provenance let alone the origins of the money that was used to buy them in the first place and I would not commit a client to a very significant purchase unless everything matched from VIN numbers to historical accountability. Is this prejudice ? I guess in a way it is as I completely disregard the fact that maybe the proposed purchase/sale is genuine and word of my refusal to accept the commission spreads throughout the rather specialised and closed world of collectors and may even restrict both the eventual sale and price of the vehicle which is entirely unfair of me. Doesn't change the fact however that I would never touch a Romanian vehicle with a barge pole.
I have some similar and some very different reasons for the few other countries on my blacklist which may be considered just as unfair.
Makes me wonder how many other people on here that choose to live in countries other than their birthplace also have similar and unreasonable prejudices even against the Vietnamese themselves that whilst carefully hidden behind an exterior of tolerant camouflage do actually exist anyway. Perhaps in varying degrees we are all guilty of prejudicial intolerance.  I guess that providing it is held in check without resorting to violence or trying to kill each other it may not even be a bad thing ?

To be honest, I like maybe 10% of the people here. The rest of the population I tend to perceive as uncivilized to various degrees. For personal reasons I have to stick around here for a few years, so I am just praying that I won't get killed in some 100% avoidable road accident just because Super Bao, the Helmetless Viet Motorbike Schumacher in Flip Flops is too mentally dull to comprehend that road rules are there for a reason.

Based on my experience of Vietnamese traffic, I suspect some (at least mild) mental illness to be prevailing. Impatience. They do crazy things to gain a few meters or a few seconds' advantage.

Car drivers regard motorcyclists sometimes as mosquitos. Brake, swerve - or they will mow you down!

If you want to drive here, make sure you really have rich and lots of experience driving in non-highway type conditions prior coming here.  Anticipate the immensely insane conditions of traffic like oncoming and heading towards you at breakneck speeds and those you think are 'turning' but realise the nincompoop ever forgot to turn his indicator 'off' etc.. Then those big container trucks who test their air horns at you and say 'get off my grandfather's Road' and so on. Welcome to Saigon..
