Insure and drive my wife's car without having a Maltese ID myself?

Hi Everyone,

We moved to Malta a few months ago with my family and it's time to get a family car.

My question is:
As at the moment only my wife has a Maltese ID can I buy the car on her name and insure it on mine as only I will be driving the car for now? Or have to insure the car on her name and add myself as additional driver?

Can I possibly drive a car in Malta owned by someone else as a tourist under my UK insurance with a certain EU extension? I still don't qualify as a Maltese resident as I travel abroad very often in regards of my business.

I have an UK driving licence and I am EU citizen holding a EU passport.

Thank you in advance.
Jay

No doubt depends from insurance to insurance. Why don't you just ask?

I found Elmo to be the most accommodating.

Thank you! I will send the insurance company another email. Probably it is a bit confusing for them that my wife has a Maltese ID and I don't.

Will check with my UK insurer if I can drive any cars abroad with extended uk insurance rather than getting another insurance in Malta. Not sure if that's possible at all.

You can insure here without. Don't email. Call. That's how Malta works.
