Scooters/Vespa in Malta - Can i drive with Australian licence?

Hi All,

I'll be moving to Malta from Sydney in September, and am toying with the idea of getting a scooter/vespa.

The question is only in terms of licensing, will I be able to use a normal australia car license for driving a  vespa in Malta, or do I have to sit other tests?

Thanks!

It looks like you can drive on your Australian licence for up to 12 months.

Would I need to do anything different for a scooter license though?

The second paragraph in your link, Terry, says you can exchange EU ,Swiss and Australian issued licences for a Maltese licence once you have lived here for 185 days or more.

According to changes mentioned in this article from the 'Times of Malta' you can drive up to a 125cc bike in Malta on your car licence (Category B).

These guys import and sell used Vespas   https://www.facebook.com/HighRevsMotorcycles/

and you can get new 125cc Lambretta lookalikes for around €2900 from    https://www.facebook.com/MotorbikeLink/?fref=ts

Over 125cc if you do not already have a motorcycle licence you would have to pass a test.

Hope this helps

Thanks fox. There was another article stated here:

http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/vi … ver.590812

That stated people needed to sit for 10 hours of lessons even though there is that waiver. Guess was just looking for a more concrete answer as the 2 articles seem to contradict each other.

That's the new 125cc law, if you already have a valid license B you need to attend theoretical and practical (info-)lessons without any final exam - every MC school offers this between 150-200 Euros.

BUT: This is Motorcycle Riding Permit is only valid in Malta !
