Potential move to Mauritius

Hello everyone,

I've been reading your posts re people's question re moving to Mauritius and I'm very impressed with amount of information you take the time to share with new arrivals.

I had one general query which I didn't see and that was the social life in Mauritius.

I'm 35, single and if I go I will be moving on my own, therefore I would be grateful if someone could comment on how much of an expat community is there, social events etc & how easy it is to meet similar people.

My initial feeling is appears to be very social but it would be good to hear from someone living there.

Thanks in advance

Paul

Hi Paul

The social life here is different from Dubai's one from what i could experience but it all depends on what you mean as similar people?

Mauritius is a french speaking country with a considerable no of french expats here but we also have now more and more english speaking expats coming and it is refreshing...

it depends where you will be staying, most expats stay by the beach, in the south or the north, lots of bars and restaurants to chill out during wkends, and wkdays is more quiet am afraid....

but you do not take long to meet ppl and have a nice enough social life, specially with this Expat.com website where you can mail or msg the members...

when do you plan to move to mauritius?

zeina

Hi Zeina,

Thank you for replying so quickly.

I'm waiting on a contract to be agreed, so assuming everything works out I expect to be there before December. I am also visiting in 2 weeks time to meet potential colleagues.

I have assumed the nite life would not be the same as Dubai as it is very fast paced here and I would welcome a more relaxed place.

By similar people, I just mean people who like to socialise  with other expats through any means such as bars, restaurants, sports clubs etc.

I have a large mix of friends from different cultures in Dubai so am open to new experiences.

I lived in France 13 years ago for a year so I may even be able to practice my French

Can you recommed the best location to look for accomodation for a single person, just arriving and looking to be near the best places of activity?

Thanks again for your information

Hi Paul,

Dont worry you will be fine and have a good time in Mauritius. I too have moved to Mauritius last year after living in Dubai for almost 15 years.
I am sure you will like it here .
Cheers!!!
Terence

Thanks Terence,

It's good to hear that from someone who has spent time in dubai.

Sure Paul, lets meet up for a drink on your arrival to Mauritius.

Cheers!!!

Grand Baie and surrounding areas  are the place to meet up with other expats in your age range there are several bars etc which are popular with the expat community here and it will take no time for you to meet people. Flic en Flac is also likely to have similar places.

Hi Paul

You'll be here in 2 weeks time right, so y not taking this opportunity to visit the different places ard to see which area is most to your liking.

The north is very popular, grand baie, pereybere, calodyne for some while others prefer flic en flac, tamarin... we all have different tastes...

Yes the pace is much slower here but still enjoyable, here you can afford to take time to just live :) being very open and active you'll find no problems meeting ppl and have a nice social life :)

Well i hope your french isnt rusty :p but anyways we all speak english here so language isnt a barier for most of us...

Maybe we can have a drink when you are here :p Drop me a private msg on this site if you wish.

Zeina

Hi Paul,

It is good to know that there is another Irish national coming over to Mauritius. I can still count the number of Irish that i know here on one hand and that is counting you too..:)

I found people here are very social and outgoing and very relaxed.. I love the relaxed way of living, no pretence at all. I love the way people always offer to invite you to their home or to any outing or social scene even after meeting you once. I have been here almost 6 months and practically living under a rock but I have made really good friends through work.

If you are an outgoing person then you will have no problem meeting new people and making new friends. (Note to self)

hey, if you need any help, just ask...

Mariam

And Paul, don't forget the regularly organized Expat.com meetups which are usually pinned up on top of the forum and where you can meet in "real life" those you met here on the forum! (I miss them by the way although our social life is much better in RAK - funny to says so! - than in Dubai [note for Terence ]
Cheers
Arlette

Thanks Mariam for the info - good to see that's some county that the Irish haven't managed to open an Irish bar, or have they - hopefully will be going soon subject to contracts etc - will let you know how i get on

Arlette - you're in RAK? better social life than Dubai? must test it out some weekend - thansk for the info on the meet-ups

:)

Paul, Mauritius is on Planet earth, of course there is an IRISH pub..:) or so i heard, i think it is somewhere up north.. would that now influence your dicision as to where to live over here?? ..:)

Hello all,

After a very lengthy period my move to mauritius has finally been confirmed - I'm very excited.

It'd be great to meet up with you when I get there as all i'll have with me is my toothbrush!

If the people there are as helpful as you have been in this blog i'll love it there.

I move in mid-Jan

Hope to catch up with u :)
