What document do I need to prove that I am single so that i can marry?

Hi all,

I am under the understanding that, in order to get married to a brazilian, I need to hand over a document that states that I am not married.
I am not sure if that is a copy of a municipal register, or on this site (see below) it talks about a declaration oficialised by a nótario (notary/solicitor(?))

https://www.casamentocivil.com.br/casam … -brasilove that I am not married in my native country.

Someone told me this has to be done with 2 witnesses.
Does anybody know more about this?

I have previously been in an união estavel, which ended in January 2013. After that I have been living in Brazil (illegally). Now I am in Europe for 6 months to reenter Brazil legally again. Someone also told me that if I have been living in Brazil I could do a declaration at a cartório there. But I have been illegal, and I´ve been outside the country for 6 months. Would that change the situation?

Help! ;)

Ok, I called with the Dutch Embassy and they told me that an extract from the population register is sufficient, so I´ll go for that

Actually, your Consulate can probably just write up a letter on Consular letterhead attesting to the fact that you are single. I know that many Americans get letters from the US Consulate here and that keeps the government happy on this score. Just remember that whatever you use it must be authenticated by your Consulate before submission to the Cartório.
