I'm not too sure, but just as Maltese coming to Australia have to meet certain requirements and that's not easy, its a similar situation going the other way round?
If you have an EU or Maltese passport than you have no issues, with an Australian pp, you will need to apply for residency - this no doubt someone can point you in the right direction, which states you have to submit a minimum amount of money per year and or purchase / rent at a specified Value.
Minimum requirement would be at least 15000 Euro per person per year to live comfortable, any less and you may ad well stay on the Gold Coast and get all the state assistances............
