Average expenses per month in KL?

What is the average expenses per month living in KL for a husband and wife? (we will most likely be living in the Cheras area)
I know that rent and car financing for 2 cars will vary and some things vary based on personal preference but aside from those like:
utilities, cable, cell phone, internet, gas, tolls, health insurance, groceries, eating out, car maintenance, etc.

I just want a feel for what it will be.
Please post your expenses so I can compare and plan.

Thanks!

My electric bill is about RM600 per month which is quite high. I pay RM278 for Astro IPTV which includes fibre optic internet and cable, town gas is very cheap but not all accommodation has it, bottled gas lasts a year or two per bottle and it's cheap, eating out can be very cheap or very expensive, depends what you like and how often, groceries...depends where you buy and what you buy, health insurance about RM4800 per year for my family but it depends on your age, car purchase payment about RM1200 per month. I'm don't know your age but if you are under 3 years old then health insurance is just a few hundred ringgit, about RM500 per month on petrol. Probably I spend about RM15k per month on expenses.

I travel quite a lot so add another RM5-8k per month on that, coz you just gotta get away from this place to visit more interesting countries in the region and to remain sane.

To put things in perspective, people are coming to work in Malaysia for monthly salaries that range from RM7,500 upwards. They are renting property at around RM2k per month (compared to a mortgage). The problems arise when you have got children and they have to be schooled in private schools, although there are Chinese ones which are a little less expensive than the international ones. These cost comparators may be helpful:

The first one basically says that living in KL is 52% cheaper than living in Vancouver.

You can compare this with the salary scale you could expect in Malaysia to see if the ratios are similar:

Yup, international schooling is what makes things expensive here. Expat school teachers require good level of accommodation, high salary and medical etc, this is their incentive. This is what pushes international school fees up so high. But if you don't have kids then that's easy.

Basically, you could just come over here and you wouldn't have any problems surviving, no matter what your budget is. Accommodation and food is as cheap as you need it to be. If you use fans instead of air-conditioning then electricity is very cheap, public transport is cheap, if you cook yourself then you also save a lot.

So I recommend just coming here and in time you can see what you can afford. Malaysia is a very easy place to live.
