Getting married in Qatar

Hi all,

We invite all the ones who got married in Qatar or who are about to get married in Qatar to participate in this thread :)

What are the formalities to get married in Qatar? Is it the same for a couple of foreigners of for a mixed couple (between a foreigner and a native of Qatar)?

Are the procedures complicated?

How long does it take to carry out all the formalities?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Armand

Hi Armand,

Being married has its advantages in terms of benefits an employee gets from the employer; housing allownces are higher, type of accommodation provided. Giving birth at a hospital here requires proof of marriage.

A Muslim marriage is the actual marriage contract conducted by a Muslim cleric, Sheikh, for a Muslim bride and groom. Most of the procedures happen in the Sharia Court.

Christians can see the below link for the requirements to get married:

Qatari men have to get permission from the government to marry a foreigner (Non GCC national). Permission is usually granted if the person has a 'good reason'. E.g. too many rejections from Qatari or Gulf women, too old, and so on. I personally can't wait until this law is changed. However once a man does get permission, the wife is automatically given citizenship after 5 years or so (if she gives up her own passport since she can only have one), and her children will be considered Qatar and get all of the benefits, e.g. free land, 0% interest loans to build on the land, free education, free water, free electricy, etc...

Thank you, Mrayes! :)

Your welcome Christine :)
