'Unfurnished' rental properties in Malta

Input needed please. I have started a new thread as the Canada one was becoming very long and varied.

Re Voodoo Hoodoo:
'Most rental places here are well equipped with furniture and electrical goods it's really hard to find an empty or even part-furnished place.'

Is there some sort of law linked to what a property owner has to supply in an 'empty' property to rent? We have noticed it changes from country to country, specifically with regards to a cooker.Besides the cooker, what is the situation regarding a washing machine, dishwasher in an 'empty' let?

How difficult is 'difficult' to find an empty place to rent,we will be looking at a year's rental to start off with as we intend to remain in Malta. We are aware of the problems regarding neighbours etc etc, but having looked at the cost of storage in the UK for six months, experienced (in the past) the inconvenience of sleeping on a bed/mattress you hate, the furniture and kitchen equipment you can't live with for another day, eeeek .... we have decided that our move in November will mean our 'stuff' comes with us. But it's the large 'older' electrical goods we have here that we don't know whether to get rid of on this side and buy new here, or will we find some of the 'empties' have them anyway, or pay the price of the goods in Malta (which from what we have read is very costly')

Thanks for listening - looking forward to opinions from all:;)

Hi rooikat,

the market for unfurnished properties is a lot smaller so it might be difficult to find enough options to really choose from and moving again with furniture when here in Malta is a lot more hassle and cost.

I will PM you as I know someone who offers a very individual approach and should be able to solve your issues in advance as your planning is long-term (November). But even so you shouldn't start looking too soon as the property market is quite fast.

You should also make sure that you coordinate the arrival of your furniture in Malta with the task of finding the right unfurnished place.

Cheers
Ricky

Hi Ricky,

Thank you - have sent you a p.m.

Hi there,

We looked into getting an unfurnished apt, but just couldn't find one. Every one we looked at was over furnished down to nik-naks and bedlinen. All electrical equipment was here, even two ridiculously massive TV's that you need to sit on the other side of the house to see what's happening on the screen.

The house we went for had enough storage in it, broom cupboard, under stairs, and basement to store our landlords' furniture we didn't need and our stuff that didn't fit. We also have an amazing landlord don't think everybody would go for that!

Quite honestly if you are driving your stuff over yourself bring what you want, if you are using a shipping company only bring what's necessary.

As Ricky said, Malta is demand and supply. Most people want a furnished apartment and demand for unfurnished is low.

If this is your first time living here, come with the minimum first and if you really want to stay bring the stuff that you need then. At least you'll have the info after being on the ground of what you need and what you don't. Six months storage in the UK is a lot cheaper then moving all your stuff backwards and forwards.

Feel free to PM if you'd like the names of some of the good storage companies we've used before.

:)

As for the bed, a mattress is easy to buy and change in any country!

Oh and good kitchenware is not that expensive here at all.

Hi Voodoo Hoodoo,

Thanks for the informative reply - will pm you for those storage contacts :D
