Good places to eat in Tripoli

I found a cracking Chinese food place yesterday:

Here:

China Express Takeaway

Located close to the Regatta roundabout end of Gargaresh Road, opposite the mosque in the row of shwarma / kebab shops known as "The Arches". There are also a couple of plastic picnic style tables if you want to eat there.

It's run by a long time Brit expat who also helps out in the kitchen and the chef is Chinese.

We ordered:

Pan friend beef dumpling 5D
Fried Green Beans with Minced Lamb 7D
Chicken Szechuan Style (Hot and Spicy) 5D
Marinated Fried Fish Fillets Fried in Chilli Sauce 10D
Egg Fried Rice 3D
Total 30D

Excellent food, excellent value for money, all dishes freshly prepared and very tasty and a filling meal for 2. You can either order over the phone and collect or just turn up and wait 15 mins.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 4.5 out of 5 (loses 1/2 star because not everything on the menu was available)

Hi Sandman 6,
Great link on the chinese food, but being so local it's going to kill my diet:D
Cheers
Geoff

The Old City restaurant. Located inside the Medina, but easy enough to find:

From entering the Medina at the main gate on Green Square, walk straight down past the suks until you get to the more open area in front of the clock tower. Take the first left inside the Medina then the first right. The Old City is 200m on the right.

Serves traditional North African food with a French flavour, and also European type dishes but with an Arabic twist. Small restaurant with nice layout, service is reasonable quick and two people eat well (starter & main course) for 50-60D.

Hi again Sandman6,
As we live in Regatta, we have been pulling our hair out trying to think of where the Chinese is, the one I am thinking of is the big resteraunt opposite the supermarket just up the road from the BBQ area near Regatte, but a friend and me ate there, and I have to say, it was the worst meal I have ever tried anywhere, so this cannot be the same place?
Cheers
Geoff

At the main Regatta gate, turn right on Gargaresh like you're going towards Dyfunction Junction.

After about 400m, there's a mosque on the right side of the road and immediately on the other side of the road there's a row of about 20 shops/bars/things, mainly shwarma and kebab sellers. The fronts of the places have an "arch" type design.

The China Express takeaway is ermmm 2nd or 3rd from the end, furthest from Regatta junction end. It's only a very small place and easily missed.

We have been past for a look and found it, so will give it a try on the weekend, so thanks very much for a great tip.
Cheers
Geoff & Denise

Hubby and I recently went to a decent place near the clock tower downtown as well. If you are facing the clock tower, walk to your right about 2 minutes and you will see a doorway leading up some stairs.  If you drive by along Al Courniche at night you will see it from the road as it is all lit up with lights and the roof is a triangular, (tent), shape.  The walls of the stairway are all covered in blankets that are red, yellow and green triangles.  It is called "Tente" and served Turkish food for very reasonable prices.  We ate soup, bread, shared an appy and had an entree each as well as drinks for 35 dinar and both of us thought it was quite tasty!

Oh yeah....the China Express takeaway in the Arches is starting to do Indian dishes from next week

Thursday night will never be the same again, must get some lager brewed up! ;)

China Express just had a facelift from the last time I was there. It has one of the best Specialist Wok cookers I have seen, great chef and really great food. The Fish was superb, just needed some Tsingtao beer and I would have believed I was back in China. It has a website china-takeaway.com, and quick to respond to any comments suggestions.

Looks like they dumped the idea of Indian Food, but will soon start Oven Roast Chicken dishes.

James

Have to say that I've found both the service and the quality of the food to be rather erratic since the makeover, with many dishes "not available" and being asked to come back later.

It seems like they don't keep a lot of the fresh ingredients (which is the big pull for me) on the premises and someone has to run out to buy when they run out.

Anyway, the food is still very good and reasonbly priced and I'd agree with James that the fish (in chilli sauce) is devine...

There is good Indian in town for those interested.  If you go over to Janzour Tourist Village you will find the Sultan Restaurant which is a nice little place with both a sit down restaurant and take out available. English is spoken and understood.  Had a go with some of our favorites that we would order at home such as butter chicken, rogan josh, palak paneer, samosas, pakora, naan and we fared quite well.  I'll go back again and again.  When you get into the Janzour tourist village you will take a left at the T intersection in front of the cinema and drive down til you see a little restaurant - can't miss it.

anyone who knows a restaurant in Tripoli that serves top class  T-bone Steak?

Dunno about a decent T-Bone...maybe at the Corinthia?

The deli on Saraj main street stocks Brazilian beef (or at least he did until last weekend  ) and I've had some pretty good Filet and also Rib Roast, prices are not too steep either. Don't expect meat that's going to melt in your mouth, but it's a damn sight tastier than the locally slaughtered muck.

Thanks Sandman6. We'll try both.

Hi ... since this post is quite old ... could you tell me if this place still exists ... Thanks :)

It did still exist when we left in July....but the place had changed hands a couple of months before and the quality had become quite variable and often a lot of dishes weren't even available. Shame.

I think it is closed now, probably being turned into another Kabab shop.

What places do deliveries in Libya ? I tried the chinese place but the phones are switched off.

Please no one suggest mo'mens.

For the Chinese restaurants it's better to go there yourself & order takeaway .... even if they answer the phone, they'll probably not understand your order.
I think the Indian Restaurant (Sultan) does deliveries/ catering but only for big quantities of food/ parties.

Any chance of finding good sushi anywhere?

The fish are great here. I am hoping for a resounding yes from you.

yes, I know what you're thinking. still somewhat new here, having not yet given up.

No. Not good.  Or any. But you can in Malta.

You can buy sushi rice, seaweed and wasabi here though, so DIY.

Hmm thanks for the moderate good news.

I should have bought that sushi book on Logos Hope. :D

Well we have the Internet to search.

Souk el Talat is the place to find the ingredients? or Souk Mahari?

No, I would try the supermarket at Palm City. There is also a new supermarket by the chinese restaurant half way up Gargarish, I'll post the co ordinates later. They have a good selection of thai/japanese/chinese ingredients. They only have 5 shelves of canned tuna though, not the usual 10. And the guy on the check out smiles, is friendly and doesn't throw your change at you. :D

Going the Chinese restaurant. Any news on the hash?

Hello Vertical-Rb,

Just to inform you that this is an old thread. You may start a new topic on the Tripoli forum.

Thank you.
