Bringing a parrot

So I am an owner of a Blackheaded Pionites parrot (Pionites melanocephalus) and a Pitbull.
Since they are both family members the only option is to bring them both with me.
DR does not have a breed ban as far as I've found out and as I've learned there are Pitbulls in DR, pretty common breed.
My is a very well behaved dog, obeys alot of commands as I used to be a dog trainer and I do take a big care/am very cautious about surroundings as in don't let him approach other people in case they would be scared of him and so on.
So I would say no big problem about bringing my dog with me.

Other thing is bringing my parrot about which I didn't find alot of information.
My parrot is bought at best and very reputable breeder and breeder is known all over Europe basically in parrot owners circles.
I got all the papers for my parrot and he is also wearing a ring, is marked. I have all the certificates (testings for parrot diseases, that he is bred and not taken from nature, everything possible).

So did anyone successfully bring a parrot when moving to the DR?

Thank you in advance for all the answers and best regards.

I know a breeder here but no one who has brought their bird with them.  I do not know the process. Sorry.

Thank you.

I found this on the USDA website. The requirements might be different from Europe, but the contacts here are both DR offices.

An Import Permit is required to bring your pet bird(s) into the Dominican Republic.

Hi, I saw your post and I am in the same situation.
Did you find a solution to bring your parrot?
We have an African Grey and read we need a import certificate for our bird. We send several emails but no respond from the institute in Santo Domingo.

Could you may be tell me if you grot your parrot in de DR? And also how did you arrange this?

Greetings,
Eline

Years ago I took my parrot to St. Croix and then back to the states.  Five years later.  Am sure you are going to need a vet certificate and more paperwork for the DR.  It is always the fear of New Castle's disease in birds that causes these precautions.  I took my bird on the plane in a carrier under the seat.  You had better get the procedure from the airlines as well.

@sberger50

It all depends on the DOM ReP. There are several airlines I can bring a parrot. But I need an import permit. And they now say in Santo Domingo it is not allowed from the Netherland. Does anyone know from wich country I can import my parrot to the dom rep?
sberger50
You had better get that info directly from the DR powers to be, and in writing.  The tough thing is the airport folks do not know how to handle this odd procedure.  It is not an everyday thing!  You may also be facing a quarantine time for the parrot.  Be prepared for the worst, but it may turn out that no one will ask anything.
planner
Its almost impossible to get an import permit for a bird.   I asked the DCDR a non profit about this.

@sberger50
I send them an email and this was their reply. So from Holland to Dom Rep…. No. But I don’t want to leave my parrot. She is like my child  so my question is, does someone know if there are countries I can fly her to and from there get the import license? It is really really important to me.
And in Santo Domingo they only send this short reply after sending several mails.

@planner
Almost impossible….. so there is a chance? I really don’t know what to do now. Feeling sad…. We are immigrating to DOM and I really don’t want to leave her in The Netherlands

I do know  others have tried without success.   As far as I know the DR does not allow imports from any country.  I will ask again.

@Tippj very kind of you.

THe affection  one has for the extended family member is worth fighting for … I’ve seen many dogs and cats on the plane coming and going ….

@eline64

      Maybe if you could provide paperwork saying it’s a service pet and needed for your mental stability…. Then maybe it would be like a prescription
planner
Doesnt work here that way.  The country does not recognize service pets.

I am told the ban on import of birds is to protect the native bird population.  Apparently they are at risk.
juandavilabk

@planner can you provide me with that info. I am in Santo Domingo, thanks

planner

Welcome to the forums Juandavilladk.  Sorry what info are you asking for?

juandavilabk

On macaw breeders in the USA

planner

I have no idea!   This is the DR forum so breeders in the USA?  Now you have me confused

Lenaemomar

Has anyone has any luck ?? I am relocating to DR and have 4 parrots I need to bring with me but can’t find any airline to accept them 😩 I found the requirements and health documents and info on quarantine just no airline to accept them please help

@Lenaemomar

Not trying to be a wise ass, but perhaps this is something you should have researched before deciding to move here?

There is a high probability that they are not going to allow it unless they are birds native to the island.

ddmcghee

@Lenaemomar More and more people are having to resort to chartered flights to bring in pets. It's not cheap, but less heartbreaking than having to leave "family" behind.

@ddmcghee

Full disclosure, I have absolutely no facts to support my opinion.

That said, if I were thinking of avoiding legal prohibitions against importing birds into the DR by sneaking them into the country on a chartered flight, I'd have a Plan B for if and when the gendarmes come a-calling at the airport.

Tippj

Yeah yer know birds are very prone to diseases. , getting them and transmitting them  ( remember the bird flu )and w/all the bird livestock over here  I would be very surprised if there wasn’t any major fine of maybe criminal penalties for sneaking them in like ddMcGhee says what is your plan “ B “ … not just this country but all countries are very strict about livestock coming across the borders….

planner

You cannot bring in birds!  It's not allowed.

crabelramble

@planner

Planner has spoken!

My translation of her words is, "You will be in very deep doo-doo if you get caught smuggling in a bird.

planner

🤣🤣🤣 you made me laugh!!!

This has come up a few times before.

No, no, no! I was certainly NOT advocating trying to sneak birds into the country! Chartering flights is in response to the commercial carriers not transporting birds. It's become much more difficult with dogs and cats as well, which is why people are using charters. I would never risk an animal's life, particularly a family pet, by trying to avoid the rules and regulations the DR has in place to protect the animals already here.

You are obviously not familiar with me or my posts, or you wouldn't have interpreted my post that way - I have complete respect for the laws of my guest country and am one of the biggest proponents of people entering this country legally and not overstaying.

ddmcghee

Please - where did I say anything about sneaking birds into this country?  Jeez - the issue is that airlines won't transport birds! That's the issue I'm addressing by suggesting charters, just like people are having to do with dogs and cats, not trying to bypass the law! 1f644.svg

planner

Bottom line birds are prohibited period!

ddmcghee

@Lenaemomar You said you had all the info on documents, requirements, and quarantine. Did you confirm that you can legally bring the birds into the country? Your post implied that transportation was your only remaining obstacle.

CHRISTOPHER DAVID56

Had this info from several years back. You may want to revalidate.
