Covid-19 updates

It is being said that Madagascar has entered a second wave.  Here is an article about the situation with covid in Madagascar

'Covid-19 report: 29 deaths and 1,327 cases in 15 days

The Covid-19 is actively circulating. The quantified assessment of the evolution of Covid-19 published in recent days by the Ministry of Public Health is becoming alarming. The ministry has released two successive epidemiological assessments in the last two days, if previously it was limited to a weekly assessment. According to these figures, from February 27 to March 13, i.e. in 15 days, 29 deaths are officially recorded, bringing to 329 the number of deaths linked to Covid-19 since March 2020, across the country.

The number of new cases is also increasing. As recently reported by the Ministry of Public Health nearly a hundred cases are discovered every day. For the period from February 27 to March 13, the country has 1,327 new cases of Covid-19 out of nearly 5,800 tests carried out.

The Analamanga region, more particularly Antananarivo, remains the epicenter of the epidemic. For the day of March 13, she has 80 new confirmed cases. The other regions most affected are particularly Diana in the north, Boeny in the west and Atsinanana in the east.

The period of resurgence of the disease coincides in particular with the various manifestations and official events organized in recent days. The contamination rate on the tests carried out over this period amounts to more than 23% against an average of 13% before February 26.

The daily report on the evolution of Covid-19 will now be broadcast every day on Malagasy National Television (TVM) for the sake of transparency, says the Ministry of Public Health.

closure COVID19
Dear parents,

Following the prefectural decree of March 15, 2021, I regret to inform you that the French school of Tamatave is closed from this day until further notice.
The educational continuity will be done remotely via pronote, beneylu school and mail.
For families and staff who encounter connection difficulties, a special system will be offered to them.
In the meantime, receive dear parents our cordial greetings.

Laurent Pierre KOMLAN
Principal

My daughter said that her school principal had received a notice saying that if there was a student with covid in a Malagasy school, the school had to close. The French high school in Tamatave has five cases, so they have to close the school now.

Anti-covid treatment: Competition between CVO + and ED1
Redaction Midi Madagasikara  April 13, 2021  0 comment  featured

We stand in line for the ED1 solution.
While waiting for the vaccines, two remedies from traditional Malagasy medicine and pharmacopoeia are to the rescue on the coronavirus treatment market.

They have the particularity of being the product of research on Malagasy flora, particularly plants, for medicinal purposes: CVO + and ED1. One benefits from the support of the State, while the other is acclaimed by an already acquired clientele. The state has promoted CVO + since the first wave of the pandemic and praises the virtues of this artemisia-based product. This remedy, developed in the form of a capsule, is composed, among others, of artemisinin and ravintsara, said the Presidency of the Republic. "These are plants with therapeutic virtues that are found in large quantities in Madagascar", we assure. The State has therefore mobilized the entire administrative machine to promote this local product. It was introduced into the official Covid-19 treatment protocol, on par with specialty drugs produced by foreign pharmaceutical industries.

Preventive. And the authorities are generous in terms of information when it comes to promoting CVO +. "The formulation of the CVO + capsule followed the international health standards and protocols in force," said the Presidency of the Republic in October 2020 as part of the launch of the formula produced by the company Pharmalagasy. "In addition to strengthening the immune defenses and preventive treatment of viral infections, the CVO + capsule is also a drug that can be used in the treatment of bilharzia, dengue, diarrhea as well as menstrual pain", we reassure. The CVO + capsule is therefore currently used by pandemic patients. And the State has already announced that a raid will be carried out by officials at the level of the social affairs department of the Presidency of the Republic and agents of the Ministry of Public Health at the level of basic health centers, in order to ensure against any diversion of drugs but also to monitor the application of this protocol at the level of Coronavirus patients.

Traditional remedy. The market has also discovered the other feat of the Malagasy pharmacopoeia, the formula presented under the name “ED1”. This is an “improved traditional remedy,” reads the small container that has been selling like hot cakes for almost a month. And, for lack of official representation, the brand is sold on the social network Facebook, after the brief promotion offered on the television sets by Doctor Edmond Rakotomalala, its founding father. In just a few weeks, the sales of this product were boosted after the testimonials of several people on Facebook. The development of this brand, which continues on its way to exceptional commercial success, is accompanied by euphoria among customers, who have never ceased to extol its virtues in the face of the threat posed by Covid-19.

Scarcity. But the State, which carefully observes the success of the remedy, asks its producer to enter the formal production circuit. The Ministry of Public Health has already winked at Edmond Rakotomalala, suggesting that he start the administrative formalities necessary and essential to protect the brand. This approach of the ministry was however badly perceived by the customers of the ED1 who had to withdraw and withdraw from the public square. Since then, Edmond Rakotomalala has become very discreet. But the reaction of this native of the Amoron'i Mania region was not enough to push back the clientele who showed themselves ready to do anything to get the potion. The clandestine circuit quickly developed, in a few days, and the scarcity of the product pushed up the prices. The line is always there in front of the ED1 points of sale.

Transparency Internationale - Initiative Madagascar: "76% of Malagasy want to be vaccinated"
Long before the official decision was made to allow the introduction of vaccines in Madagascar, Transparency International-Initiative Madagascar conducted a survey to probe citizens' perception of anti-covid 19 vaccines but also of measures taken by the State. against the pandemic. The results were released to the press yesterday.
Transparency International- Initiative Madagascar (TI-MG) conducted a survey of 1,700 individuals aged 18 and over in Analamanga, Matsiatra Ambony and Atsinanana, three intervention areas of the “Aramaso” project. "About 75% of respondents approve of the introduction of vaccines against covid-19 on Malagasy territory and 76% have affirmed their wish to be vaccinated," Ketakandriana Rafitoson, executive director of TI-MG, said yesterday during the meeting. a meeting with the press held in Ampahibe. It is especially people over the age of 50 who are in favor of vaccination. 92% of respondents want citizens to have the free choice of whether or not to be vaccinated. They are almost unanimous that vaccines should be free.
According to the results, 56% of those surveyed believe that the measures taken by the State are adequate. The majority of the remaining 44% remain skeptical since 83% of them affirm that there is a lack of awareness around the variants of covid-19, the measures in force and that the control of the application of these measures remains insufficient. .
Recommendations
Prompt and appropriate public access to up-to-date pandemic information is required as recommended by the TI-MG. "It is important to communicate in a clear and transparent manner on the vaccines available (types, producers, unit price, sources of financing, contracts) and on the methods of vaccination while respecting the freedom of choice of citizens" continued Ketakandriana Rafitoson. Once again, the TI-MG highlighted the need to improve transparency in the management of funds allocated to the fight against Covid-19. “The control institutions and the parliament are invited to strengthen their actions to monitor and control the actions of the executive in this new period of health emergency. Measures should also be taken to ensure a correct supply of medical inputs in order to avoid any speculation ”. For the distribution of social assistance, improvements are essential both on communication and on logistics in order to avoid crowds which only worsen the rate of contamination.
The TI-MG also advocates the taking of measures to prevent the risks of corruption and embezzlement at all levels and stages of the health crisis. It agrees with the concerns of the Transparency International movement on the risks of corruption linked to the vaccine market.
