Healthcare in Portugal for UK citizen

Post new topic

Embee

Hello

I am a UK citizen considering early retiriement in Portugal. Due to my age (early 50s) I will not be entitled to S1 healthcare coverage from the UK.  For a Portugal residency card application do I need to show that I have private health insurance or am I exempt from having to provide this as this is not a requirement for Portuguese citizens in the UK.

Best regards

Have a read of the UK government website about living in Portugal. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-portugal

Thank you SimCityAT. It all seems straightforward.

Also curious to know about the experience of anyone in a similar situation as me.

Best regards

Hi MB,
First of all, I don't understand that UK authorities refuse to grant you the S1 form. I did it last Summer in France before moving here; perhaps UK regulations are different although I thought S1 was a EU one.
Anyway, you don't have to show any health insurance when applying for residency in Portugal. Being insured is not a requirement. I would advise to compare your current policy with what you can get here in terms of cost and coverage.
Good luck
Jean-Paul
