How to bring your car to Somalia

Hello everybody,

If you exported your car to Somalia, were there any formalities that needed to be completed beforehand? What were they?

What is the best way to export your car? Is there a limit on the number of vehicles, or perhaps the age of the vehicle? Are there limits on emissions or emission controls in Somalia?

What are the expected costs of exporting a car? In your opinion, is it worth it?

Once you arrived in Somalia, what were the applicable taxes? What was the customs process like?

How do you go about registering an imported car in Somalia?

Is it best to buy a car once you have arrived or to bring your car with you, in your opinion?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Bhavna

Hello guys,

In Somalia cars are mainly imported from the Arab countries and ferried across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean to Somalia. Once it reaches the Somali ports mandatory taxation and other custom procedures are followed. You simply visit the port upon arrival of your car do the necessary paper work and pay the imposed taxes, then you are issued with a log book and number plates and free to drive away with your car :)

The most tricky part in bringing you car to Somalia via road. There are cars brought to Somalia via road from the neighbouring countries i.e Kenya and Ethiopia. When bringing a car from Kenya you have to hire drivers to bring it to Somalia. It is very complicated because of security reasons you have to hire drivers who know the road better and are familiar with the terrain. The other important thing is that the drivers should be of different clans depending on the location you are. THIS IS VERY TO NOTE. Certain clans have strong influence in certain locations so you have to do your research well and employ probably enough drivers depending on the location you want your car to be taken.

I will be glad to give more insight on this if the topics seems interesting.

Hi Nurwizzy,

Thanks for your feedbacks.

So it will also be a hassle to bring a car from let's say, Europe or Australia ?

All the best,
Bhavna
