Moving to Kenya with your family

Hello everybody,

When settling abroad with your spouse and children, the expatriation process requires an extensive preparation.

What are the considerations to take into account when moving to Kenya with your family? What challenges have you faced? How did your children adapt to their new environment?

What is your recipe for a successful family expatriation in Kenya?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

I think that the main challenge about relocating to Kenya with children is schooling and finding a good school.  Many expats, who may be here for shorter time periods would want to look towards an international school.  There is a reasonably good choice of these in Nairobi, but commuting to and from school in heavy and often gridlocked traffic can extend the school day massively, so the choice of school can also determine where you may live.

International schools, such as the Braeburn Group are expensive, which would probably not be an issue if the education cost is being taken care of.

Personally, I find that the standard of education and discipline, exceeds those in the UK.

On the whole, Kenya is a wonderful place for children to grow up - the weather encourages the to be outdoors more and more active.  Unlike the UK, there isn't the bad weather and societal paranoia about paedophiles lurking everywhere, leading to a sedentary indoor lifestyle.  Houses are not centrally heated and sealed, leading to the health benefits of freely circulating air (though how fresh this is in Nairobi is debatable).

For example:  we are bringing up our 8 year old granddaughter, in Nyeri.  We have a nice sized compound and live on a quiet road.  Here, she is active and always outside, running around and going next door to play with a friend.  When we visit the UK, she is inside much more and hates this.

Children tend to be very adaptable and don't have the worries that adults have, so will settle readily into Kenyan life
