Making phone calls in Uganda

Hi,

When settling in Uganda, one of the priorities is to be able to make phone calls.

How to proceed to get a landline installed in Uganda?

What are the mobile operators?

What is your average monthly budget?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Maximilien

Land line? forget it!! It's cheaper to call Canada for 10 minutes then to call the people next door to you. The cell phone companies have every one here under their thumb and are ripping everyone off.

I actually find the competitive cell market very service oriented. Until you have worked in a place like Ethiopia with a state run monopoly which requires a foreigner to register a passport to get a cell sim card you will not appreciate the level of service and low costs in Uganda.  For example, I use MTN primarily for broader service coverage reasons, but my limited use of talk minutes and 50 MB of data per month averages 40,000 ugx= <US$10.  In the US that cost me $75.  My primary internet is via Smile, a little pricier at $68 for 20 GB per month, but this is all my international skype and data needs.  And when traveling to nearby countries it is still quite affordable to text back home each night.

there are many wireless operators..and call rate is also cheap.
Wireless internet also is there operator Airtel is there.
This should not be an issue in most part of uganda.
