Help! Information on schoolbooks in Greece

Dear all,

I am currently performing a comparative study of educational systems across Europe with a focus on the use of schoolbooks and Greece is a country I'm also researching. Who can and wants to answer a few questions about schoolbooks in Greece?
I stated them below... Many many thanks for your help! :)

By the way: I already contacted the Greece ministry of education and the embassy, but with little to no response (yet) :( , that's why I'm reaching out on this forum...

Kind regards from the Netherlands,

Questions:

Books and education system
1.    How many schoolbooks per year does a pupil need regarding textbooks and workbooks? (primary and secondary school)
2.    What is the average price of new textbooks? And of workbooks?
3.    Who pays eventually for the books, parents/students or the school/government?

Decision making
1.    Who decides what books will be used? (teacher/head of department/school management/ government) Is it the same for primary and secondary education?
2.    How often do schools/teachers change methods, with order words: how many years are schoolbooks being (re)used ? Who decides on the change (teachers or governmental bodies) and what are the reasons for change?

Needs
1.    Do you know how the distribution of schoolbooks is managed at the moment and is there a need for change in this way? I mean by this: do pupils buy the books themselves by a bookstore and pay for the books, or do they get the books from school, or is there a distributor that delivers the books to the pupils, or…?
2.    Do you think that there is a need for cheaper schoolbooks, or for a rental system of schoolbooks in some kind?

ICT in schools
1.    Are schools using digital learning methods? What is the price level of these methods compared to the hard copy version?
2.    Are schools using (specialised) pupil administration software systems (for example to administer absence of pupils)?  If yes, which one? If not, is there a need for it?

Closure
Do you know any teachers or industry experts in your country that I could contact for this research?

Thank you very much for your time and effort!
Kind regards,
Nicoline Nagtzaam

Hi Nicoline, I can't answer all your questions but I'll try and tell you what I can :)
My daughter is in the 2nd year of primary education.

Books and education system
1. Last year my daughter had 7 textbooks throughout the year and currently she has 9 textbooks.
2/3. I don't know the costs of the books as they are provided by the school. Parents buy the exercise books for the children to write in, usually 5 or 6 for the school year.

Decision making
1.I believe the books are decided by the education ministry as the same books are used throughout the country.
2. Not sure

Needs
1. The books are delivered to the school at the beginning of the school year - not sure by whom - and then distributed to the pupils.
2. Not really applicable as we don't pay for them!

ICT
1. Not in my daughter's school
2. Ditto

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Dear 'trouble 13',

thanks for the info! Any idea how much an excercise book cost on average?
Thanks again!
Greetings, Nicoline

Hi, the exercise books can be bought for as little as one euro, so not a great outlay for the parents :)

My kids are at high school (lycee = lykeio in Greek).

Very often they donŽt get their text books by the beginning of the school year and work with photo copies.
For instance, at the last election the printers had been too busy to print election material to print school books...
They used to GIVE all the books to the kids to keep forever. In high school last year, the books were returned (but I get the impression to be thrown away - not to be recycled).

DonŽt expect anyone public to answer any mail. The mail address is only for show off. My sonŽs history teacher says sheŽs contacted the ministry by letter and mail many times with questions, but never get an answer. [moderated: keep that kind of comment for you please]
