Hi,

Living in a foreign country implies to discover its culture, to learn and master the cultural codes.

How did you deal with that? Share with us your culture shock stories where you experienced a funny or awkward moment in the USA.

What is your advice regarding the don’ts and what would you recommend to avoid any mistake?

Thank you in advance for sharing your stories,

Christine

I have been living on the West Coast of USA since 95.  Compared to Australia the USA is much more concerned with being politically correct.  Hyper sensitive on issues of race, economical status, politics and religion.  In a work environment I find it far more cut throat and people cover their behinds quicker then speaking the truth or doing what is right for others.  Perhaps because the USA is far more competitive it drives this culture or perhaps the group think mentality is too strong.   Stand up for your beliefs, stay true to your character and don't follow what is "normal".  All of these things can be accomplished with an awareness of the cultural differences.  On the flip side, the US can be far more progressive on certain things and it really is up to you to survive and thrive here ie push yourself to achieve your best.   Good luck expats and don't take everything at face value with your rose colored Aussie mateship glasses on.
