Finding a doctor and medical insurance in London

I am thinking about moving to London from the US.  I have asthma and allergies, so I need regular prescriptions and a good physician.  Does anyone know how to find a good physician in London?  Also, is it possible for a US citizen to secure medical insurance in London? Thanks.

Hi-

As long as you have proof of your address (a utility bill, phone bill or bank statement) and a photo ID (passport), you shouldn't have any problem registering with the NHS.

Generally speaking, you are limited to visiting the GP in your catchment area, i.e. wherever your home address is, though if you have special medical needs, they will often refer you to specialists working in the hospitals.

As for how to find good physicians, I don't have much experience with that (I rarely need to visit the doctor, let alone a specialised one). You can do some research on the NHS website, as well as BUPA (the main private medical insurer in the UK).

While NHS isn't flawless, it does a decent job. If you decided to move here, I'd suggest registering with your local GP as soon as possible, and when you have your new patient appointment, let the doctor know your needs and ask for a referral for a specialist.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Tina!  I'll look at their website.  Good, straightforward information! :D

Hi cocoapod,

While I agree with Mrs Editor on the fact that NHS generally works fine, it might be a bit difficult to get an appt depending on where you stay. If you are looking for some immediate relief, I suggest you head towards BUPA. They charge around 60 quid per appt (15min block).

Not only that, there's no need for you to take time off your work (if that's an issue) for an appt at NHS either.

Also, as you are holding a foreign passport, you are eligible for an expat insurance. Try googling around for that.

Hope this bit helps!
