Single, and Desperately Lonely Aliens

My first time as an expat and I think I've observed a phenomenon: there is a load of family-less, lonely, pathetic foreigners desperate for some familiar human contact. Kinda like myself, except that I am slightly luckier and have some relatives here. Not that I enjoy being force-fed steamed rice and lamb by my cousins, but still, a bit better than a single 29 year old male spending his Friday night counting all the white cars that drive by his arid apartment, and almost becoming a monk or a homosexual in the process. (how would I know this? you ask yourself)

Anywhooo...Veterans, am I right? is this a common phase among expat communities in countries like Libya, which aren't many.

Any advice??

there was a post kind of this some time ago... poor guy... he got many replies... good luck, you're a good guy, MoEL. I do hope you'll not get so many comments this time. And good luck to find a companion to go out. ;)

MoEl! I totally understand what you are saying... I guess the best way to break this routine is by organizing some weekend trips to discover the nearby areas. Its my second week here and am starting to feel the same.

Come to the Hash run this friday, you'll meet alot of people very quickly and soon have a very busy social life. You don't have to be a runner, plenty of senior types just walk and socialise. A friendly bunch. I'll be there :)
I can PM details if you want.

find your circle and develop your hobbies!

There is plenty of social activity in the expat community although it's highly unlikely that you'll be invited to anything on an open internet forum.
Talk to people you work with, clients, people in coffee shops &  supermarkets, especially people of your own nationality. Go to the beaches in Janzour or Regatta (if you can).
Sitting behind a computer waiting for the world to come to you won't give you much of a life though.

I will very likely be there this Friday, mudman. went to http://tripolirun.ning.com/ but couldn't find more info. is it on the 7th of may

However, this thread was intended as a satire more than a call for pity.

eh

It was just too rude to post.

Hash runs aren't part of the Tripolirun.ning group.

It's too "social" for that ;)

One of those peculiarly English things? I only knew one Hash, and clearly this is a different one.

Oh, here is a third kind of Hash: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_function

Yep!!...it's English.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_House_Harriers

will give it a try, nonetheless.

It's a drinking club for people with a running problem

I used to do the Hash in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where there was even less to do than in Tripoli. We even used to get one of Obiang Nguema's bodyguards come along sometimes, Markarov 9mm included :/

I also did a few in lagos (too humid) you end up drinking one too many star beers at Pats Bar. and also in Riyad but the after party aint so good.

always feel like crossing the border just for a nice cool mojito every time i get screaming libyan men barging into my office every week.

(sorry if im out of topic. just needed to "express" something too :D )

Is that 'Screaming' like Graham Norton & John Inman ?

It's the constant invitations to "come swimming" that crack me up

mud man, i think, like Matt Lucas.

I feel excluded and distanced. Someone needs to explain these islanders' jokes to the poor spirits amongst us.

Something along the lines of "they bat for the other side" ;)

And are on the wrong bus.

whatever...

where ever...

Hi, i advice to make trip to east of Libya, there r alot of nice places, feel free if u like that!
regards!

Hash runs... so I suppose there is beer after the run right?! or is it just fictional... like you pretend that tea is beer? hehe

nope!! still here!

the best way to spend time here :- diving , swimming
and internet , group of friends for soccer
it's how  spending most of my time here,
you are Libyan and i don't think it's hard for you to get group of friends for running ,dive and soccer ,

And then I woke up and realised, Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore...;)

BTW in Naija, "Toto" means pussy...
